The Wedding Banquet Trailer: Bowen Yang and Kelly Marie Tran Lead Queer Remake from Fire Island Director

Bowen Yang, Lily Gladstone and Kelly Marie Tran are coming together for a hilarious new wedding-themed comedy.

On Tuesday, Jan. 28, Bleecker Street debuted the first trailer for The Wedding Banquet, a remake of director Ang Lee's 1993 rom-com of the same title.

In the movie, Saturday Night Live star Yang, 34, stars as Chris, a man whose Korean boyfriend Min (Han Gi-Chan) proposes to their roommate Angela (Star Wars alum Tran, 36) so he can remain in the U.S. The group, including Angela's partner Lee (Oscar-nominee Gladstone, 38) see their plans get more complicated when Min finds out his grandmother is flying from Korea and expects to throw a large, celebratory wedding, not knowing Min is gay.

"Angela and her partner Lee have been unlucky with their IVF treatments but can't afford to pay for another round. Meanwhile their friend Min, the closeted scion of a multinational corporate empire, has plenty of family money but a soon-to-expire student visa," as a synopsis sets up.

"When his commitment-phobic boyfriend Chris rejects his proposal, Min makes the offer to Angela instead: a green card marriage in exchange for funding Lee's IVF. But their plans to quietly elope are upended when Min's skeptical grandmother flies in from Korea unannounced, insisting on an all-out wedding extravaganza."

The Wedding Banquet also stars Joan Chen and Youn Yuh-jung, who was the first Korean actress to ever win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Minari back in 2021.

The new movie comes from director Andrew Ahn, who previously directed the 2022 comedy Fire Island and multiple episodes of Bridgerton's third season.

The Wedding Banquet had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 27, where Yang revealed in a post-screening Q&A that the cast watched the Showtime reality series Couples Therapy to "dissect all these relationship dynamics together" while making the movie.

"It accelerated our bonding and it just all kind of glued us together in a way that transcended even what Andrew was able to give to us as a director," Yang said.

The Wedding Banquet is in theaters April 18.
