Sustainable strategies for substituting plant protection products in fruit production

Fruit growers are faced with many challenges, they need to maintain a competitive yield while respecting EU regulations limiting the use of plant protection products (PPPs) and their impact on the environment. A Spanish Operational Group is developing alternative strategies for stone fruit, berries and table grapes which can be applied instead of PPPs. Read on.

Using data to manage environmental impact of livestock farming

Climate change, water quality, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, these are all important issues for livestock producers. A digital application has been developed in France which uses specific data collected on-farm to provide cattle, goat and sheep farmers recommendations on overcoming sustainability challenges. Farm data for better farm performance

Over 100 participants from 28 countries attended the EIP-AGRI workshop ‘Farm data for better farm performance’ in December 2021. They discussed how innovation and knowledge exchange can help farmers unlock the full potential of the data on their farms. The report from the event has now been published. EIP-AGRI brokerage event ’Get involved in the EU Mission: A Soil Deal for Europe’

This aim of this event was to run matchmaking sessions and create networking opportunities amongst farmers, advisors, researchers, and other relevant stakeholders to support the preparation of proposals for the EU Mission ‘A Soil Deal for Europe’. It took place on 8-9 June 2022 in Brussels, Belgium. Presentations and other documents to download online.

EIP-AGRI Workshop Conversion to organic farming

The EIP-AGRI workshop ‘Conversion to organic farming: innovative approaches and challenges’ will take place next week in Florence, Italy. It will focus on exchanging knowledge and sharing innovative, inspirational practices that can support farmers in successful conversion to organic agriculture. Sneak preview of new Focus Group topics

A call for applicants for 3 new EIP-AGRI Focus Groups will soon be launched. Topics will cover: Recovery of abandoned agricultural lands, Enhancing biodiversity on farmland through high-diversity landscape features, and Social farming and innovation. DID YOU KNOW

Did you know that on 22 June, the European Commission will publish a revised version of the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive. This directive is closely linked to the Biodiversity Strategy and the Farm to Fork Strategy which includes the adoption of pesticide reduction targets. More information can be found here.

The Sustainable EU food system framework initiative aims to make the EU food system sustainable and to integrate sustainability into all food-related policies. The European Commission would like to hear your views on the key issues within the initiative, complete the questionnaire by 21 July.

Rebalancing the agri-food value chains for a more sustainable future

Ηorizon 2020 project Ploutos is working to rebalance and enhance the sustainability of agri-food value chains by looking at behavioural changes, collaborative business models and data-driven technologies. A sustainable Innovation Framework is being applied on 11 pilot sites to develop new innovative solutions under real conditions. Find out more.

Horizon 2020 project wins online award

Did you hear that H2020 DEMETER project won the .eu Web Awards? It is an online competition which acknowledges the best websites, using the .eu, .ею or .ευ extensions. DEMETER which is about smart farming and IoT (Internet of Things) won Best Website in the Better World category. As part of their prize, there is currently a billboard about the project displayed in Brussels Airport. Read more.

Digital technology for safety and health

Farmers and foresters are exposed to many occupational safety and health risks. A policy brief by EU Agency for safety and health sets out how digital technology has the potential to reduce these risks, but there are still some obstacles to tackle. Read the report.

This Joint Call is about using ICT technologies to transform European agri-food systems into sustainable, resilient, transparent and fair systems through transnational, collaborative, inter-/transdisciplinary research and innovation projects. Proposals submitted must address one of three specific topics and the deadline for submission is 15 August 2022. More info.
