MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2024) Fans
Before You Begin
Warning
Read Battery Safety and follow workspace and battery handling guidelines before you begin.
Remove the following parts before you begin:
Tools
Adjustable torque driver (10–34 Ncm)
ESD-safe tweezers
Nylon probe (black stick)
Torque driver (blue, 0.65 kgf cm)
Torx Plus 3IP 44 mm half-moon bit
Torx Plus 5IP 50 mm bit
Refer to a full list of tools required for all repairs.
Important
This procedure requires screw covers (923-10114), which are included with a replacement part, but can also be ordered separately.
Note
The steps and images in this procedure show the removal and reinstallation of both fans. However, you can replace each fan separately.
Removal
Use the flat end of the black stick to gently peel the right fan flex cable off the top case. Repeat this step to peel the left fan flex cable off the top case.
Use ESD-safe tweezers to peel off the four film screw covers from the four middle screws.
Important: Don’t reuse screw covers. New screw covers (923-10114) are included with replacement parts, but can also be ordered separately.
If you're reinstalling the existing fans, use the black stick to remove all adhesive residue. Otherwise, continue to step 4.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to remove the four 3IP screws (923-06960) from the fans.
Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to remove the four 5IP screws (923-06929) from the fans.
Remove the fans from the top case.
Reassembly
Position the fans in the top case. Align the screw holes in the fans with the screw holes in the top case.
Set the torque value on the 10–34 Ncm adjustable torque driver to 25 Ncm.
Use the adjustable torque driver and 5IP bit to reinstall the four 5IP screws (923-06929) into the fans.
Use the blue torque driver and 3IP bit to reinstall the four 3IP screws (923-06960) into the fans.
Peel four new screw covers (923-10114) from the adhesive backing. Position the screw covers over each of the four screws.
Press and hold each screw cover for 15 seconds to adhere them to the four screws.
Press and hold the fan flex cables for 15 seconds to adhere them to the top case.
