Best practice and the approach for application migration to cloud?
I am seeking guidance and insights regarding cloud migration and adoption strategies from a senior Enterprise Architect or Solutions Architect at a high-level.
- An existing business application is running in the on-premises Data Centre. Which major considerations and approaches would you take if you migrated the application to the public cloud (Azure)?
- How can we ensure it is well-architected and meets business requirements?
Any assistance or recommendations you could provide would be immensely appreciated.

Hi,
I believe that's too little information for a complex answer.
But start looking at the CAF , there you will have a direction to follow. You need to define what will be done, will it be a lift and shift, or will you do a modernization, if it is lift and shift I recommend take a look at the Azure Migrate documentation.

Hi,
1. you should run an assessment of your existing DC with Azure Migrate/other tools. This would assess everything and then following this if you wanted to only select one application you will have data on the dependencies, etc.
2. There are several frameworks you can follow to build your landing zone and deploy as per best practice (already linked in other replies)
One possible option is if your company has a MS partner organization you can speak to them about getting assistance-they can help you using MS funding such as AMM and also get you connected to Fast track. Worth to take a look on this:

Hi,
I recommend you to start looking through the Modernize Application chapter in Cloud Adoption Framework Modernize any application or framework in the cloud - Cloud Adoption Framework | Microsoft Learn CAF has a lot of good pointers for this scenario.
Once you have a design, go through the Well Architected Framework too Microsoft Azure Well-Architected Framework - Azure Well-Architected Framework | Microsoft Learn
My experiance is that the biggest risk is that not all business requirements are collected and documented in the beginning on the project. Make sure to interview and collect all requirements from application users and owner.

andersbe, Thank you for the quick response and the suggested best practice.
Regarding migrating and getting assistance from Microsoft, is this type of project also within the scope of Microsoft Fast Track to select and implement the Azure Landing Zone as well?
- andersbeCopper ContributorHi,
Without all detalis it is difficult to answer. But you can of course nominate your project to FastTrack for Azure. https://cxp.azure.com/nominationportal/fasttrack
