Industrial production in Austria decreased by 0.4% year-on-year in September 2024, following a downwardly revised 2.3% drop in the previous month. This marked the ninth consecutive month of falling industrial activity, although at the softest pace in the sequence. Output rebounded for energy (1.6% vs -2.9% in August) and capital goods (0.5% vs -0.3%), while that increased for consumer non-durables (5.8% vs 3.3%). At the same time, production declined less for consumer durables (-12.3% vs -15.1%). In contrast, output dropped further for intermediate goods (-6.2% vs -6%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output rose by 0.8% in September, rebounding from a downwardly revised 0.5% fall in August.

This marked the eighth consecutive period of contraction in industrial activity, as output tumbled for energy (-7.3% vs 5.9% in July). Additionally, production continued to decline for intermediate goods (-5.4% vs -3.6%), consumer durables (-20.3% vs -15.9%). Meanwhile, output increased for capital goods (0.6% vs -4.2%) and consumer non-durables (1.9% vs 2.5%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, industrial output decreased by 0.8%, reversing from a 1.3% rise from the preceding month.
