Euro Area Construction Rebounds
Construction output in the Euro Area edged higher by 0.2% from the previous year in October of 2024, trimming the revised 2% contraction in the earlier month, to record the first period without contraction in Eurozone construction since January. Output was carried by rebounds in the construction of buildings (0.6% vs -1.7%% in September) and civil engineering activity (3% vs -0.8%). In the meantime, the decline in specialized construction activities eased (-0.9% vs -2.5%). Output grew the most in Portugal (6.9%), Spain (6.3%), Belgium (3.8%), and Austria (3.8%). On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, construction output was 1% higher.

Euro Area Construction Output Falls Less in September
Construction output in the Euro Area decreased by 1.6% year-on-year in September 2024, following a 2.5% fall in the previous month, marking the eighth consecutive month of declines. Output shrank for building activity (-1.6% vs -2.5% in August), civil engineering works (-0.5% vs -2.5%) and specialized construction activities (-2.2% vs -3%). Among the largest economies in the Euro Area, construction activity declined markedly in Germany (-4.8%) and France (-4.1%), but increased in Spain (+2.2%). Construction output fell by 2% in the European Union. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, production in construction went down 0.1% in the Euro Area and in the EU.

Euro Area Construction Activity Down for 7th Month
Construction output in the Euro Area slumped by 2.5% year-on-year in August 2024, following a revised 2.3% fall in the prior month, marking the seventh consecutive month of declines. Output shrank for building activity (-2.1% vs -3.2% in July), civil engineering works (-3.2% vs -0.3%) and specialized construction activities (-3% , the same as in July). Among the largest economies in the Euro Area, construction activity declined markedly in France (-5.3%) and Germany (-3.8%), but increased in Spain (+1.1%). Construction output fell by 2.4% in the European Union. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, production in construction went up 0.1% in the Euro Area and increased by 0.4% in the EU.
