Retail sales in Germany decreased 0.6% month-over-month in November 2024, following an upwardly revised 0.4% rise in October and compared to forecasts of a 0.5% gain. Sales in the food retail sector rose 0.1% only and sales in the non-food retail sector went down 1.8%, namely e-commerce and mail order (-1.2%). Year-on-year, retail sales increased 2.5%, compared to an upwardly revised 2.4% rise in October and above forecasts of 1.9%. In recent years, part of the Christmas business has increasingly been brought forward to November due to special promotions in the days around Black Friday or Cyber Monday, especially in online and mail order sales. Sales in the food retail sector rose 1.7% and those in the non-food retail sector went up 2.3%.
