Hungary Manufacturing PMI
In Hungary, the HALPIM (Hungarian Association of Logistics, Purchasing and Inventory Management) Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index measures the performance of the manufacturing sector and is derived from a survey of executive managers in charge of purchasing at manufacturing enterprises. The Index is based on five individual indexes with the following weights: New Orders (30 percent), Production (25 percent), Employment (20 percent), Suppliers’ Delivery Times (15 percent) and Inventories (10 percent). A reading above 50 indicates an expansion of the manufacturing sector compared to the previous month; below 50 represents a contraction; while 50 indicates no change.

Hungary Factory Activity Contracts at Softer Pace
The HALPIM Manufacturing PMI edged up to 49.2 in July 2024 from 49.1 in the previous month. It was the second consecutive period of contraction although at a softer pace, with most sub-indices rising and five in the recovery range. The index of new orders decreased by 0.1 percentage point, indicating an increase in the stock of new orders in July. Moreover, the production volume index is 2.3 percentage points higher compared to the previous month. Meanwhile, employment dropped by 0.5 percentage points, the transport lead time index fell by 1.0 percentage points, and purchased stocks decreased by 0.1 percentage points. Among the foreign market indicators, the import index increased by 3.5 percentage points and the export index by 1.4 percentage points.

Hungary Factory Activity Steady in May
The HALPIM Manufacturing PMI stood at 51.8 in May 2024, unchanged from April, indicating moderate expansion from the previous month. It was the eighth consecutive month of expansion although coming below both the long-term monthly average of 52.5 and an average reading of 54.1 in the same month of the past three years. The purchase price index grew, signaling a strong increase in prices. Also, the employment index dropped, indicating contraction. Both the export and import indices were below the 50-point mark, also showing contraction.

Hungary Factory Activity Slows in April
The HALPIM Manufacturing PMI slightly fell to 51.8 in April 2024 from a downwardly revised 52.2 in the previous month, but still remaining above the 50 threshold. It was the seventh consecutive period of expansion, with most sub-indices rising and seven in the recovery range. The index of new orders grew by 0.8 percentage points (57.8), with stock of new orders expanding for seventh straight month. Moreover, the purchase volume index rose by 2.2 percentage points (54), as well as purchasing price index by 6 percentage points (56.5). Meanwhile, level of purchased stocks decreased by 3.2 percentage points (45.2). Among foreign market indicators, import index increased by 2.9 percentage points (50.6), along with export index by 3 percentage points (54.3).
