In Italy, the Confidence Climate Index covers 2,000 Italian consumers. The survey is done by phone and assesses households’ economic conditions, employment and saving prospects and expected purchases of durable goods. The consumer confidence index is adjusted for seasonal effects and fixed to a base year of 2005. The value 100 indicates no evolution in consumer sentiment, a value over 100 shows increasing confidence and a value under 100 indicates low expectations.

The consumer confidence index in Italy fell to 96.6 in November of 2024 from 97.4 in the previous month, well below market expectations of 97.2, and retreating further from the two-year high of 98.9 touched in July to highlight a greater response to higher rates by the ECB from Italian consumers. The gauge measuring the current economic climate fell to 98.7 from 99.2, and the index measuring future expectations fell to 93.8 from 95.

Still, the figure remained firmly above the average for the year, marking a sharp contrast to sentiment among businesses. Consumers’ sentiment deteriorated for the country’s current economic climate (99.7 vs 103.9 in September), while the gauge measuring expectations for the country’s economic conditions fell to a six-month low (95 vs 97.4). On the other hand, the gauge measuring conditions for consumers’ personal finances edged higher (96.6 vs 96.3).
