Luxembourg is an export-intensive economy. The country has traditionally imported most of its consumer goods and exported industrial products (steel). Exports now also include chemical and rubber products, finished glass and the most profitable financial services. The nation remains dependent on energy imports. European Union is by far its largest trading partner, accounting for about 84% of exports and 87% of imports.

Luxembourg Trade Gap Widens in July
Luxembourg's trade deficit widened to EUR 0.72 billion in July 2024 from EUR 0.59 billion in the same month last year. Imports rose 5.8 percent to EUR 1.95 billion due to purchases of chemical products (20.9 percent), fuels & lubricants (13.8 percent), and transport equipment (3.9 percent). Imports were up mostly from the EU (6.2 percent) and the US (35.4 percent). Meanwhile, exports fell 1.9 percent to EUR 1.23 billion, driven by lower sales of other manufacturing goods (-12.4 percent) and machinery & equipment (-9.5 percent). Exports fell to Germany (-6.7 percent) and the US (-22.3 percent).

Luxembourg's trade deficit narrowed to EUR 0.67 billion in May 2024 from EUR 0.7 billion in the same month of the previous year. Imports fell by 2.9% to EUR 1.95 billion, mainly due to lower purchases of other manufactured articles classified by raw material (-16.3%), manufactured articles made of common metals (-13.9%), and beverages and tobacco (-10%). Arrivals plunged mostly from Japan (-39.6%), Germany (-6.5%), and Belgium (-4.8%). Meanwhile, exports declined by 2.1% to EUR 1.27 billion, with sales dropping primarily for other manufactured articles classified by raw material (-13.7%), manufactured articles made of common metals (-6.2%), and machinery and transport equipment (-5.1%). Shipments fell the most to Japan (-39.6%), Germany (-6.5%), and Belgium (-4.8%).

Luxembourg's trade deficit narrowed to EUR 0.61 billion in April 2024 from EUR 0.64 billion in the same month of the previous year. Imports fell by 0.7% to EUR 1.93 billion, mainly due to lower purchases of mineral fuels and lubricants (-16.4%), machinery and equipment (-9%), and other manufactured articles classified by raw material (-7.8%). Arrivals plunged mostly from Japan (-46.8%) and Belgium (-7.7%). Meanwhile, exports increased by 1% to EUR 1.32 billion, with sales rising primarily for transport equipment (27.2%), chemicals and related products (15.9%), and food products and live animals (7.7%). Shipments increased to the USA (10.7%) and France (4.7%).
