Sri Lanka Consumer Prices Fall at Faster Pace
Consumer prices in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo fell to 2.1% year-on-year in November 2024 from 0.8% in the previous month. This marked the third consecutive month of consumer deflation and the steepest in the sequence, as prices continued to fall for housing and utilities (-13.1% vs -9.6% in October). Moreover, costs moderated for food (0.6% vs 1%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (18.4% vs 22.7%), furnishings, household equipment and routine maintenance (1.5% vs 3.6%), and restaurants and hotels (2.4% vs 3.6%). Meanwhile, prices accelerated for health (6.1% vs 3.8%) and recreation and culture (6% vs 5.1%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell 0.3% in November 2024, easing from 0.5% drop in the previous month.

Annual inflation rate in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo fell to -0.8% in October 2024, extending last month's deflation of -0.5%, which marked the first deflationary period since March 1995. Prices fell for transport (-1.8% vs 0.8% in September 2024) and housing & utilities (-9.6% vs -8.4%), while it rebounded for food & non-alcoholic beverages (1% vs -0.3%) and clothing & footwear (1.1% vs 0.1%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices declined by 0.5%, after a 0.1% fall in September.

Sri Lanka Enters Deflation for First Time Since 1995
Annual inflation rate in Sri Lanka’s capital Colombo fell to -0.5% in September 2024, down from a 0.5% increase in the previous month, marking the first deflation since March 1995. Prices deflated for food & non-alcoholic beverages (-0.3% vs 0.8% in August 2024) and fell further for housing & utilities (-8.4% vs -6.8%). Moreover, prices eased for transportation (0.8% vs 3.5%). In contrast, prices rebounded for clothing & footwear (0.1% vs -0.4%) and increased at a faster pace for recreation & culture (3.9% vs 3.1%). On a monthly basis, consumer prices deflated by 0.1%, after a 1.8% fall in August.
