Turkey's government budget turned to a deficit of TRY 129.6 billion in August 2024, from a surplus of TRY 51.3 billion in the same month a year earlier. Budget expenditure increased (+45.8%) year-on-year to TRY 820.3 billion, driven by higher non-interest expenses (+52.1%) at TRY 723 billion and interest expenses (+11.4%) at TRY 97 billion. Turkey's government budget switched to a deficit of TRY 96.7 billion in July 2024, from a surplus of TRY 48.6 billion in the same month a year earlier. Budget expenditure increased (+81.6%) year-on-year to TRY 827.7 billion, driven by higher non-interest expenses (+75.8%) at TRY 735 billion and interest expenses (+145.4%) at TRY 93 billion. Meanwhile, revenues rose (+44.9%) to TRY 730.9 billion, driven by higher tax revenues (+35.8%) at TRY 612 billion. The country’s primary balance switched to a deficit of TRY 4.2 billion in July from a surplus of TRY 86.3 billion a year ago.

Turkey's Budget Deficit Highest in 6 Months
Turkey's government budget deficit widened to TRY 275.3 billion in June 2024, from TRY 219.6 billion in the same month a year earlier, marking the highest deficit since December 2023. Budget expenditure increased (+77.6%) year-on-year to TRY 866.5 billion, due to higher non-interest expenses (+70.3%) at TRY 767 billion and interest expenses (+165.6%) at TRY 99 billion.
