Retail sales in Brazil increased 0.4% month-over-month in October 2024, following an upwardly revised 0.6% rise in September, and beating forecasts of a 0.2% fall. Sales rose for furniture and appliances (7.5%); office equipment, IT, and communication (2.7%); textiles, clothing, and footwear (1.7%); fuels and lubricants (1.3%); hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages, and tobacco (0.3%); and books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (0.3%). In contrast, a decline was seen in sales of pharmaceutical, medical, orthopaedic products (-1.1%) and other personal and household items (-1.5%). Year-on-year, retail sales in Brazil were up 6.5%, the biggest annual rise since May, following an upwardly revised 2.3% gain in September.

Brazil Retail Sales Rise Less than Expected
Retail sales in Brazil rose by 0.5% from the previous month in September 2024, following a revised 0.2% decrease in the prior month and missing market forecasts of a 1.1% increase. Sales growth was observed in four out of eight activities, including other personal and household items (+3.5%); fuels and lubricants (+2.3%); pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic, and perfumery products (+1.6%); and hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages, and tobacco (+0.3%). Conversely, declines were seen for furniture and appliances (-2.9%); office equipment, computers, and communication materials (-1.8%); textiles, clothing, and footwear (-1.7%); and books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (-0.9%). On a yearly basis, retail trade grew by 2.1% in September, after an upwardly revised 5.3% surge in the prior month and also below market estimates of a 3.7% advance.
