Chile Current Account Gap Narrows in Q2
Chile posted a current account gap of $1,817 million in the second quarter of 2024, smaller than $3,457 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. This improvement was driven by a narrower services deficit of $2,476 million, compared to $2,854 million a year earlier, and a substantial increase in the goods surplus, which rose to $5,687 million from $3,173 million, mainly on the back of higher copper exports. On the other hand, the primary income shortfall widened further to $5,260 million from $4,227 million, and the secondary income surplus fell to $232 million from $451 million.

Chile Current Account Swings to Deficit
Chile recorded a current account deficit of $104 million in the first quarter of 2024, swinging from a surplus of $513 million in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The goods surplus narrowed sharply to $3,828 million from $6,379 million in the previous year, largely due to a plunge in net industrial exports. In the meantime, the primary account shortfall grew sharply to $4,393 million from $3,292 million. On the other hand, the services gap narrowed slightly to $2,406 million from $2,552 million, while the secondary account swung to a surplus of $162 million from a deficit of $23 million.

Chile Current Account Deficit Shrinks in Q4
Chile current account deficit shrank to USD 3,659 million in the fourth quarter of 2023 from USD 5,188 million in the corresponding period of 2022, as the the secondary income gap narrowed to USD 22 million from USD 484 million a year ago and the services gap decreased to USD 2,600 million from 4,136 million. Meanwhile, the goods surplus was little changed at USD 3,828 million compared to USD 3,843 million. On the other hand, the primary income shortfall widened to USD 4,865 million from USD 4,411 million in Q4 of 2022.
