The Kansas City Fed’s Manufacturing Production Index fell by one point from the previous month to -5 in December of 2024, its second consecutive negative print, and consistent with other surveys flagging contractionary trends in the US manufacturing sector. The drop took place amid a fresh decline in new orders (-17 vs -9 in November), the lowest since July, driving shipments to renew their contractionary momentum (-13 vs 0) despite the faster depletion in order backlogs (-22 vs -14). The lower demand for capacity drove firms to trim the average employee workweek further (-10 vs -9). In turn, inflationary pressures picked up amid higher prices paid for raw materials (16 vs 5), driving manufacturers to raise their charges (10 vs 6). source: Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City

The diffusion index is calculated as the difference between the percentage of total reporting increases and the percentage reporting decreases.
