The Commission welcomes the updated European air traffic management (ATM) Master Plan, adopted today at the Governing Board meeting of the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking.
The updated ATM Master Plan outlines an ambitious vision to transform European airspace into the world's most efficient and environmentally friendly skies by 2045. To achieve this, the Plan charts a comprehensive roadmap for the digitalisation and modernisation of Europe's air traffic management systems.
Welcoming the Plan, Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, said:
"I envision transport leading Europe’s transition to a sustainable and competitive future, benefiting all Europeans. Aviation faces significant challenges, including security threats, increasing demand for flights, the urgent need to cut emissions, and inefficiencies in air traffic management. This new Master Plan is a united, forward-looking response, propelling the sector into the digital age while building a more resilient and efficient air transport network."
The updated Plan is at the heart of the ATM innovation cycle in the revised Single European Sky framework (SES2+). It provides strategic direction for future investments and regulatory decisions, with 10 key investment priorities supporting the twin green and digital transition. It puts a targeted focus on the deployment of SESAR technological solutions to curb the capacity issues and environmental challenges faced by European aviation, including a new digital air traffic management service model which will thoroughly modernise ATM service provision in Europe.
