Nearly 40% of the freight exchanges between the EU Member States are conducted by sea. Every year, 400 millions passengers embark and disembark in European ports. The internal market for the provision of maritime transport services is of key importance for the performance of the European economy as a whole and for the quality of life and prosperity of maritime regions. Islands and peripheral regions are particularly dependant of maritime transport.
