Issues with being paid

I have had a terrible experience with this company. I worked for Chris as a contractor on multiple occasions and was often paid late. Recently, I was sub contracted by Chris to work on an event called Groovebox in Nottingham. I had to leave the event early for personal reasons and Chris agreed to pay me for the time that was in attendance, however he now refuses to pay and has blocked me on every form of communication (except for emails, which he is simply not replying to). To make matters worse, he has also refused to return my equipment to me despite me invoicing for its time in his possession. Not responding to a creditor of your business is highly irresponsible and despite my best efforts to resolve this matter with him amicably, he is pushing me towards taking legal action to recover my losses.
