Great Place to Eat and/or Drink
Great food and first-class service (and banter) from Simon. Booking is strongly recommended as this place's reputation is growing, especially for Sunday lunch.
The place has been extended and refurbished but very tastefully. None of your 'plastic pub' decor here (like some large pub chains). I love is that they've kept the original Cock Hotel vibe and feel, so its heritage is still there, along with details about its history displayed. So you can drink, eat and learn!
We had a party of 8, plus two dogs, so were advised during booking whether we would mind being seated in the bar, which was absolutely fine. It had a lovely atmosphere, too, so felt very comfortable. Plenty of room, so didn't feel claustrophobic and on top of each other, unlike some other eateries.
Drink selection was great, with a good selection of wines and beers on offer (incidentally, Slumbering Monk is a lovely Joules brew, best described as a cross between a stout and dark porter).
The food was delicious and although not the cheapest carvery around (though it does not proclaim to be), this was well-worth it - very tasty indeed.
Very dog-friendly, and really friendly staff. Desserts are pretty good too.
My only criticism is that service became a little slow toward the end - drinks and desserts - yet staff seemed to be aplenty, with some standing round chatting, so I assume a likely miscommunication, perhaps. We're only human, I guess. That said, none of us were in any rush so it didn't spoil the experience. Indeed, I'm looking forward to returning.
