Site managers from 9 countries will gather in the Historic Centre of Oaxaca, Mexico on 17-18 June for the first capacity-building workshop of the project “Latin America and the Caribbean: Strengthening capacities for resilient communities though Sustainable Tourism and Heritage Safeguarding’’ supported by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The workshop is being organized in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Tourism of the State of Oaxaca, and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Urban Development of the Municipality of Oaxaca de Juárez.
With a focus on responsible tourism development and strategic visitor management, the workshop will examine community engagement in decision making processes and the importance of safeguarding and supporting intangible cultural heritage. The outcomes of the workshop will help determine the project’s strategic priorities for sustainable tourism moving forward.
Ten countries are participating in this important regional project (Belize, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama). Through a synergy approach, the project aims to support the implementation of the 1972 World Heritage Convention and the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Educational and Cultural Coordination of the Central American Integration System (CECC/SICA) is providing support to help ensure the regional integration of the project.
