Histoire
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

An Amazing Read!

This book is not one I would have been looking for, but I'm so glad it found its way to my feed. It's a precious gem; well written and full of nuance. I felt the full gamut of emotions Esme had as I walked through her story and saw from her perspective what it was like to be a young woman at the turn of the 20th century. Part love story, part coming of age, part history lesson, this book will inspire anyone who is fascinated with words to expand their vocabulary and pay more attention to words, especially those that have fallen out of usage. There was some also some fascinating history here that I knew very little about and I believe the author did a fantastic job of weaving a wonderful story around it.

Histoire
Even as a girl Morgan has always been wild, like the seas which batter the cliffs beneath her home, Tintagel Castle. But she has always been safe, too. Then one day her father is called away to a war from which he does not return. In his place comes the High King, Uther Pendragon, with the sorcerer Merlin lurking in his wake. Uther claims Morgan’s mother, the Lady Igraine as his queen.

Masterfully written by an amazing storyteller—you’ll feel like you’re right there with Morgan in her story! They couldn’t have picked a better narrator! I’d give this book more stars if I could! I loved it so much I bought the paper copy plus her second book Le Fey! I can’t wait to hear the rest of Morgan’s story!

This will be one I buy in hardcopy. It’s such a lovely read. I followed along using google maps and it was cool to “look around a see” a bit of what Raynor & Moth would have seen on their fantastic journey of loss, heartbreak, renewal and restoration. I can’t wait to read her other books!

Histoire
Immerse yourself in the captivating world of Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter." Set in Puritan New England, this timeless classic delves into themes of sin, guilt, and redemption. The story follows Hester Prynne, a woman branded with a scarlet letter "A" for adultery, as she navigates the complexities of societal judgment and personal redemption. Hawthorne's exquisite prose and rich symbolism bring the characters to life, while exploring the human condition with profound insight.

What can I say that hasn’t already been said about Nathaniel Hawthorne? The man was truly brilliant at weaving a rich tale that takes the reader back in time. I have been doing much study on Salem because its history is also part of my history and this book gave me a vivid picture of what it was like to be a woman back in that period.
This version, narrated by Cori Samuel, is an excellent example of how a narrator can bring a classic to life and infuse the reader’s mind with technicolor images of a bygone era. I would give her more stars if I could for this performance.
I feel so enriched by this listen and can’t wait to “read” more of Hawthorne’s stories.

This book is great! The narrator is easy to listen to as well. I have both ASD and ADHD, and I feel like this book would be great for anybody who falls in any neurodivergent category. There’s a lot of great practical information in here to help your kid succeed, even if they’re not neurodivergent. I think employers should read this too because it may help them know how to help an autistic employee who struggles, but would otherwise be a great asset to their business.

Histoire
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

This was a good read, but a hard read. It gives a glimpse, an unfolding of what it's like to be an innocent child, to feel and see red flags, but dismiss them because you don't let yourself entertain the possibilty that your parents could be preditory. Thank you Jeanette for sharing your story. I used to watch iCarly with my daughter when she was young. It made us both laugh. It crushes me to know you were going through hell when that was made. I hope you find peace and joy in your life.

Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

This is by far one of the best books I have ever read on trauma & child development. Every teacher, school administrator, preacher, coach, law enforcement officer, family court judge, counsellor, and potential parent should read this book. What a different world it would be if we all knew the stuff in this book. It’s life-changing!

With so much doom and gloom in the news about the state of climate change, this book was a breath of fresh air. It showed the impact of consuming a steady diet of negative news and challenged us to take a different approach. The narration was crisp and clear and was a joy to listen to. This is definitely a book I will recommend to others.

Histoire
If you’re struggling to stay on top of your to-do list, you probably have a good reason: anxiety, fatigue, depression, ADHD, or lack of support. For therapist KC Davis, the birth of her second child triggered a stress-mess cycle. The more behind she felt, the less motivated she was to start. She didn’t fold a single piece of laundry for seven months. One life-changing realization restored her sanity—and the functionality of her home: You don’t work for your home; your home works for you.
