From the author of The Emperor of All Maladies, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and The Gene, a #1 New York Times bestseller, comes his most spectacular book yet, an exploration of medicine and our radical new ability to manipulate cells. Rich with Mukherjee’s revelatory and exhilarating stories of scientists, doctors, and the patients whose lives may be saved by their work, The Song of the Cell is the third book in this extraordinary writer’s exploration of what it means to be human.

Outstanding

An absolutely outstanding review of current knowledge in cell biology written in a most digestible manner. Even as a health professional with many years of experience and an academic background, I found this book to be a wealth of knowledge. In fact, I would suggest it as required reading for any student of biomedical science.

His death and its aftermath initiate a spiraling circle of treachery that will span three decades and entwine many lives. It usually takes a decent book to keep me going. This one hooked me and kept me on the line the whole way through. Ken Follett is a brilliant author and Michael Page was absolutely outstanding in performing the novel.

This updated and expanded edition of Dr. Berry’s best seller Lies My Doctor Told Me exposes the truth behind all kinds of “lies” told by well-meaning but misinformed medical practitioners. Nutritional therapy is often overlooked in medical school, and the information provided to physicians is often outdated. However, the negative consequences on your health remain the same. Advice to avoid healthy fats and stay out of the sun has been proven to be detrimental to longevity and can wreak havoc on your system.

A little too dogmatic?
Évalué le: 2022-07-27
In the face of biologic complexity, I have found (in over 42 years of academic clinical experience) that dogmatic opinion such as that often espoused by Dr Berry is in fact, counterproductive. I have found that the more I experience and the more I read, the less CERTAIN I become on any topic; something to bear in mind ... Having said this, I do admire his basic outlook and principles.

The Nazis presented themselves as warriors against moral degeneracy. Yet, as Norman Ohler's gripping best seller reveals, the entire Third Reich was permeated with drugs: cocaine, heroin, morphine and, most of all, methamphetamines, or crystal meth, used by everyone from factory workers to housewives, and crucial to troops; resilience - even partly explaining German victory in 1940.

Very interesting indeed!
Évalué le: 2022-03-24
This was a bit of an eye-opener. I had no idea that Hitler had got himself so thoroughly enslaved. The story is interesting and well researched with the exception that the author had a few hiccups in terms of physiology and toxicology. Nevertheless I found those easy to overlook in the context of the whole.

Histoire
The First World War is one of history’s greatest tragedies. In this remarkable and intimate account, author G. J. Meyer draws on exhaustive research to bring to life the story of how the Great War reduced Europe’s mightiest empires to rubble, killed 20 million people, and cracked the foundations of the world we live in today. World War I is unique in the number of questions about it that remain unsettled. After more than 90 years, scholars remain divided on these questions, and it seems likely that they always will.

Histoire
As Charles Darwin suggested more than a century ago, the differences between animals and humans are of degree and not of kind. Not long ago, ethologists denied that animals had emotions or true intelligence. Now, we know that rats laugh when tickled, magpies mourn as they cover the departed with greenery, female whales travel thousands of miles for annual reunions with their gal pals, seals navigate by the stars, bears hum when happy, and crows slide down snowy rooftops for fun.

Struggled to finish this. Content is fairly well written but the narration is poor. Hayden Panettiere has a charming voice but it is better suited two children's books than something with more gravitas. Also, when I hear things like "proof" being used in place of alcohol % content and Aesop pronounced incorrectly, I start to lose interest.

Histoire
In this landmark work that will forever change your understanding of how and why America went to war in Vietnam, author Fredrik Logevall taps newly accessible diplomatic archives in several nations and traces the path that led two Western nations to tragically lose their way in the jungles of Southeast Asia. He brings to life the bloodiest battles of France’s final years in Indochina - and describes how, from an early point, a succession of American leaders made disastrous policy choices that put America on its own collision course with history.

The media often suggest that Russia poses the greatest threat to America's national security, but the real danger lies farther east. While those in power have been distracted and disorderly, China has waged a six-front war on America's economy, military, diplomacy, technology, education, and infrastructure - and they're winning. It's almost too late to undo the shocking, though nearly invisible, victories of the Chinese. In Stealth War, retired Air Force Brigadier General Robert Spalding reveals China's motives and secret attacks on the West.

I wondered..
Évalué le: 2021-07-02
I just opened a package. it was a Milwaukee angle grinder. I love the brand. I glanced at the instructions: "Printed in China" then the tool itself: "Made in China". I wondered how many Americans had lost their jobs and how many Chinese were being paid menial wages and how many corporate moguls were driving home in expensive cars, to beautiful homes. I wondered....

The search to find medicines is as old as disease, which is to say as old as the human race. Through serendipity - by chewing, brewing, and snorting - some Neolithic souls discovered opium, alcohol, snakeroot, juniper, frankincense, and other helpful substances. Ötzi the Iceman, the 5,000-year-old hunter frozen in the Italian Alps, was found to have whipworms in his intestines and Bronze Age medicine, a worm-killing birch fungus, knotted to his leggings.

This is the second time I have read this book and I must say, gained far more the second time around. It is absolutely excellent and I suspect sometime in the future I will give it a third shot. The narration is excellent except for some rather obvious mispronunciations of various syndromes and medications. However they are not so badly pronounced as to be unrecognizable!
