Thea is a washed-up mimic exterminator who expected more out of life, not some hero from stories. Aven is an impulsive wandering adventurer whose personal goddess is constantly getting her into trouble. Neither of them has the slightest interest in getting involved in world-shaking historical events. History doesn't care what they want, unfortunately. It's fallen right into their laps in the shape of a god-slaying weapon from a fallen civilization. Thrown together out of chance, Thea and Aven will have to learn to work together if they want to survive their pursuers.

The world building is interesting and will satisfy anyone who has read the authors previous work.
This one is blatantly and obnoxiously in your face with its metaphors and theme that any subtext is smothered.

Read rather than listen

While the voice actor was great, the overly long stat blocks and retreading of information is better as a book than an audiobook .
World building is interesting, however it is not enough to make the series worth reading.
It could get better later on however the comedy in this book felt like each side character had one joke that they could only repeat in slightly different ways.

Great and novel modern day take on a system apocalypse but with real people not just self inserts

First and foremost, the voice actor narration is excellent. There is enough differentiation between major characters, that it is easy to understand,
This is a unique twist on the system, apocalypse genre . I hope that they continue to have matured nuanced, and interesting characters that are further developed in this trilogy.

DNF from bloat and America! Perspective

Is reads like latent propaganda and has a lack of nuance. It reads like someone needed to boost recruiting for the Rangers as about every 20th word is rangers.
The actual descriptions of battles is superb and is well done however, the overall plotting, theming and lack of nuance, makes this a DNF for me

The first half of the book is a bit rough however it does get quite a bit better once the demons and other NPC type characters are fleshed out and you start seeing different perspectives. Overall satisfying but only if you put at least 7 hours into it
Edit: After listening to the second book I can say that it is similar in tone to the later parts of this book and has been worth putting in the time as a listener. Updated start rating to 4 after a reread.

Very much suffers from the choice of accents that breaks immersion, Even though you can tell the narrator is trying their best.
overall okay, but it lagged during the first several acts. a lot of emphasis on world building which was surprising this late into a series with a lot of retcons. The main protagonist's character is inconsistent.
