Histoire
On an unnamed island off an unnamed coast, objects are disappearing: first hats, then ribbons, birds, roses - until things become much more serious. Most of the island's inhabitants are oblivious to these changes, while those few imbued with the power to recall the lost objects live in fear of the draconian Memory Police, who are committed to ensuring that what has disappeared remains forgotten. When a young woman who is struggling to maintain her career as a novelist discovers that her editor is in danger from the Memory Police, she concocts a plan to hide him beneath her floorboards.

Beautiful imagery
Évalué le: 2024-11-04
I loved the author's imagery, the personification of items, the way she describes things that have disappeared from people's memories before giving them names. However, I felt the premise of the book might have been better done as a narrator, rather than in first person. Things that would have been known by a narrator but not by someone who has "lost" memories.

Histoire
Passionate, profound, and deeply moving, The Hours tells the story of three women: Clarissa Vaughan, who one New York morning goes about planning a party in honor of a beloved friend; Laura Brown, who in a 1950s Los Angeles suburb slowly begins to feel the constraints of a perfect family and home; and Virginia Woolf, recuperating with her husband in a London suburb and beginning to write Mrs. Dalloway. By the end of the novel, the stories have intertwined, and finally come together in an act of subtle and haunting grace.

Good writing bad reading

enjoyed the intricately woven stories but the reading was off putting too many non dramatic pauses

Histoire
After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and to everyone’s surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state. There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. But it’s a canny move on the part of the president. With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate

Absolutely loved this book
Évalué le: 2021-10-23
I'm not usually a reader of suspense novels, but bought this because it was co-written by Ms. Clinton and Ms. Penny. I loved everything about it - the story line, the backgrounds which might not or might not be true, the wonderful description of real people (whose names have been changed to protect the .......), the amusing and sometimes downright hilarious similes. I do hope there will be a sequel.
