Histoire
From our talent-rich neighbor to the north comes this biography of one of the most successful Canadian rock bands, The Tragically Hip, which announced a year-long tour after sharing the news of lead singer Gord Downie’s inoperable cancer. Now available to US listeners, The Never-Ending Present details what led up to the memorable night when music fans all over the world watched Downie’s heroic final performance.

A Collection of Essays
Évalué le: 2023-11-14
This is a collection of essays. It is described as being separate chapters that can be read independently, Some statements and quotes need to be recycled across chapters to support the independent nature of each. I found this to be frustrating in an audiobook format, especially one that is relatively short, The Author also makes it very clear in the beginning that this is not an officially sanctioned book. It's an enjoyable listen and George Stromboulopoulos is great. The Hip are part of the soundtrack of my life and I enjoyed the references to concerts and festivals I attended, but there felt like there was something lacking in the scarcity of interviews and quotes from the true inner circle of the band members and families.

Bob Mortimer’s life was trundling along happily until suddenly in 2015 he was diagnosed with a heart condition that required immediate surgery and forced him to cancel an upcoming tour. The episode unnerved him but forced him to reflect on his life so far. This is the framework for his hilarious and moving memoir, And Away....

This book is enjoyable from start to finish. I wish it was longer and I hope Bob lives many more years so that there is a follow up second volume.

Histoire
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Audio inconsistencies really take away from this.

Great story. The Author is sympathetic to Oppy but does not pull punches on character flaws, peoples opinions of him, and the effect on his personal life. If you are looking for information on the Manhattan Project look elsewhere first. This is the biography of a man and knowledge of the historical events is a critical frame of reference but not the intent of the book.
Blackstone Audio needs to re-record this in its entirety. As I listened to this I wondered if they didn't initially record an abridged version and then, at the very last minute, ask the voice actor to record the omitted lines at home on his computer. I can't stress enough how jarring the differences are in the audio and voice acting quality between what I assumed to be the initial reading and the edits. The narrator himself on the base recording has done a fine job. Engaging and lively reading. The edits and corrections vary wildly in quality. There are times when name pronunciations have clearly been re-recorded outside of a studio and the single word edited in. I have several Blackstone Audio recordings in my library and this is the first time I've been able to notice edits and corrections. Very strange that this is still available in the condition it is in.

Histoire
For a man who insisted that life on the public stage was not what he had in mind, Thomas Jefferson certainly spent a great deal of time in the spotlight. Historian Joseph J. Ellis sifts the facts shrewdly from the legends and the rumors, treading a path between vilification and hero worship in order to formulate a plausible portrait of the man who still today "hover[s] over the political scene like one of those dirigibles cruising above a crowded football stadium, flashing words of inspiration to both teams".

Overall an entertaining and worthwhile listen. Some 1990’s references are a little dated but don’t take away from the listen. Needs an update to reflect current DNA results regarding the Jefferson/ Hemings controversy.

Histoire
We view the long, horrifying struggle from the vantage of the White House as Lincoln copes with incompetent generals, hostile congressmen, and his raucous cabinet. He overcomes these obstacles by winning the respect of his former competitors, and in the case of Seward, finds a loyal and crucial friend to see him through. This brilliant multiple biography is centered on Lincoln's mastery of men and how it shaped the most significant presidency in the nation's history.

Enjoyable listen, but it is abridged so if you are like me and don't pay attention you may be dissapointed. I was looking for the deeper dive into the details.
The reading was excellent and the abridgement was spot on and kept the narrative very tight.
