Histoire
Many of us feel trapped in a grind of constant change: rolling news cycles, the chatter of social media, our families split along partisan lines. We feel fearful and tired, on edge in our bodies, not quite knowing what has us perpetually depleted. For Katherine May, this low hum of fatigue and anxiety made her wonder what she was missing. Could there be a different way to relate to the world, one that would allow her to feel more rested and at ease, even as seismic changes unfold on the planet?

excellent narrator, insightful reflectins & memoir
Évalué le: 2023-06-26
the sample of this book left me transfixed, and it is the only sample I have listened to more than once. the book was different however. once I shifted gears to accept it as more of a memoir (rather than a more philosophical, psychological exploration of COVID's impact), I continued to enjoy it. she is a great writer, and shares some brilliant insights on life. she has the style and personality of a poet, which to me is admirable and enjoyable, but to others may seem self-absorbed and melodramatic. cynics may not enjoy her offering. I found it worth it, and got many delicious quotes out of it.

Rumors begin to spread of a species of hyperintelligent, dangerous octopus that may have developed its own language and culture. Marine biologist Dr. Ha Nguyen, who has spent her life researching cephalopod intelligence, will do anything for the chance to study them. The transnational tech corporation DIANIMA has sealed the remote Con Dao Archipelago, where the octopuses were discovered, off from the world. Dr. Nguyen joins DIANIMA’s team on the islands: a battle-scarred security agent and the world’s first android.

deep, rich, thoughtful, compelling

I have just begun enjoying the occasional sci-Fi book, which is outside of my normal listening habits (I tend toward nonfiction). I am studying psychology in school, and have been very curious about consciousness. Somehow I came across a recommendation for this book. I am so grateful that I did. it is very well written, brilliantly creative and thoughtful. it explores deep questions about the nature of the mind, society, and more, but within the framework of an incredible vision of the future. if you enjoy sci Fi, and are curious about psychology and philosophy, this will be a joy, as it was for me. And this must be Emphasized: I have been listening to audiobooks for years. This narrator may be the best yet. I will be looking into her other works and choosing other things she has done. it is a dramatic reading, and wow does she exceed expectation. Every character is distinctive, emotion is on point. Wow.

Tackling some of humanity’s oldest questions along with new quandaries only he could imagine, these stories will change the way you think, feel, and see the world. They are Ted Chiang at his best: profound, sympathetic, revelatory. Ted Chiang tackles some of humanity’s oldest questions along with new quandaries only he could imagine.

wonderful, thought provoking, richly imaginative

I start many more books than I finish. I am also one to read far more non-fiction than fiction. After some research around how to dip my toe into sci-fi, this book was recommended, and I am so thankful I got it! Each story is an incredible works of imagination, Chiang's mind creates vast, rich, compelling visions of the future. After each story I found myself exploring the moral implications and possibilities that were raised. There are several different readers. All but one are excellent. The female reader employs repetitive intonation, and her way of doing male voices was... at times comical and other times annoying. But the stories were enough to keep me going. Well worth the credit and the time!

Histoire
Man’s Search for Meaning is the chilling yet inspirational story of Viktor Frankl’s struggle to hold on to hope during the unspeakable horrors of his years as a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the experiences of those he treated in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering, but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose.

Histoire
In 1967 Thomas Merton traveled to Thailand, seeking to further the Buddhist-Christian dialogue that was his passion. This beloved Trappist monk and explorer of the inner life died unexpectedly on that trip but not before writing a final letter to his brothers at the Abbey of Gethsemani in Kentucky. In the letter Merton wrote that he now realized that everything he had been searching for could be found at his own hermitage, within the Christian tradition.

thank you James Finley, this is a gift, I will take this in for the rest of my life.
The guided meditation in chapter 2 has been deeply helpful for me, and the final chapter on the mind of Christ was the catalyst of real change in my life like few other teachings ever have.

Histoire
Whether our notions of "God" are personal projections or inherited traditions, author and theologian Brad Jersak proposes a radical reassessment, arguing for a more Christlike God and a more beautiful Gospel. A More Christlike God suggests that such a God would be very good news indeed - a God who Jesus "unwrathed" from dead religion, a love that is always toward us, and a grace that pours into this suffering world through willing, human partners.

Magnificent for both the intellect and the heart
Évalué le: 2020-08-01
Jersak is intellectually honest as well as heart-full in his faith. He is academically rigorous (look up his education!), and thoroughly committed to a biblical faith. The first chapter may throw some off (RE: his discussion with a faith-vanishing highschool student), but it serves to brace the reader for the biblical tour that is the rest of the book. Scales may fall from the eyes of some, simply because of a closer encounter with the truth of the God of the Bible. For example, I find his proposal for a christocentric hermeneutic to be very compelling. After this book, I went on to listen to "Her Gates Will Never Be Shut" and am thoroughly grateful for Jersak's ministry to the Church through his prayerful research and writing.
The narrator is fine, but he mispronounces quite a few words in nearly every chapter (e.g. "mediate" as "meditate"), especially those relating to the Bible. It's easy enough to brush off, though—it doesn't ruin the overall experience.

Everlasting hell and divine judgment, a lake of fire and brimstone - these mainstays of evangelical tradition have come under fire once again in recent decades. Would the God of love revealed by Jesus really consign the vast majority of humankind to a destiny of eternal, conscious torment?

Compelling, character-driven, dark, thoughtful
Évalué le: 2018-05-25
Akkad is a very good writer: descriptive but not gushy, imaginative but not distracted, thoughtful but not soap-boxy, character-driven but with a well-paced plot. This book is not for the faint of heart: it gets quite dark, but thankfully without being gratuitous... Most of the graphic events are left just out of the reader's view. Early on I began bracing for a book that was just an indirect tirade against Republicans out Democrats. Not so, not at all. Insights regarding the contemporary political scene can be found (and both sides are dissected), however, American War is more deep than picking a side... It is a stark examination of human nature and social forces. This is not Fox versus CNN (I wouldn't have finished it if it was). Unlike another reviewer, I am glad that Akkad did not get caught up in trying to predict future technology —that isn't the point, and would distract and detract. His vision of the future is compelling, measured, absorbing, and convicting. This is a timely book, and I reckon it will be for awhile yet.

Couldn't get into the constant 80's pop culture nostalgia and angst-preaching. The world he creates wasn't particularly vivid or compelling. Protagonist wasn't very enjoyable, only to be pitied or tolerated.
