Histoire
Two masters of epic fantasy have combined in this brilliant collaboration to create a rousing tale. This is the story of Shana, a half-breed born of the forbidden union of an Elvenlord father with a human mother. Her exiled mother dead, Shana was rescued and raised by dragons, a proud, ancient race who existed unbeknownst to elven or human kind. From birth, Shana was the embodiment of the Prophecy that the all-powerful Elvenlords feared. Her destiny is the enthralling adventure of a lifetime.

A very interesting experience...

This has to have been one of the oddest titles I have encountered.
The writing is... not good. It's hard to get into without giving spoilers, but there is a writing device the author uses over and over again to the point where I started laughing every time it occured.
Instead of writing out a dramatic scene or conversation, the author uses what I will call "time skips". For example: A main character is in a situation where they had better explain themselves quite brilliantly or they could be in a lot of trouble. Instead of writing the "brilliant explanation", the author will have the character realize they had better come up with something clever, then skip the conversation and resume the narrative right after with the character saying something to the effect of "Wow! I sure am glad I thought of that."
Over and over and over again.... things happen in the novel, but the author skips the actual climax of the scene and carries on. It was almost comical. I'm still trying to figure out how they got away with that in a published book! They even do it in the final climax of the story, resolving the conflict off screen.
Now, that being said, the story itself isn't bad. It's a very neat concept and once the story got going I was interested enough to finish it.
Overall.... it's not boring. I was entertained. It isn't GOOD, but it wasn't bad either. The writing style and choices are almost so poor, they add a meta level of entertainment if you take the time to Mark them and ponder how or why they were included.
I may go and read the next book in the series to see how it goes. I can't say if I recommend it or not. I certainly wouldn't point anyone towards it without warning them of the above.

Have you heard that language is violence and that science is sexist? Have you read that certain people shouldn't practice yoga? Or been told that being obese is healthy, that there is no such thing as biological sex, or that only White people can be racist? Are you confused by these ideas, and do you wonder how they have managed to challenge the logic of Western society? In this probing volume, Helen Pluckrose and James Lindsay document the evolution of the dogma that informs these ideas, from its coarse origins in French postmodernism to its refinement within activist academic fields.

Not an easy listen...
Évalué le: 2021-01-06
This book was extremely interesting, seemingly a more moderate left wing refutation of far left social Justice theory; a perspective not often heard.
Due mainly to the subject matter, the work is quite academic at times and can be hard to follow/difficult to get into, especially for the layperson.
That being said, it is also quite informative and supremely interesting.

In Dangerous Personalities, former FBI profiler Joe Navarro shows listeners how to identify the four most common "dangerous personalities", and analyze how much of a threat each one can be: the Narcissist, the Predator, the Paranoid, and the Unstable Personality. Along the way, listeners learn how to protect themselves both immediately and long-term - as well as how to recover from the trauma of being close to such a destructive force.

A very interesting read
Évalué le: 2021-01-01
Concise, to the point and in plain language, the book is a very interesting look at the behaviors and attitudes that may indicate a malevolent individual. The check lists are easy to understand and apply to every day life.
If you feel uneasy or threatened, this book can be an excellent resource to validate your observations and provide the impetus for action.
A quick listen, I was able to finish the book in a single sitting. For the time investment, it was surprisingly thought provoking and I would strongly recommend to anyone in distress or with even a slight interest in self defense or psychology.

An excellent series
Évalué le: 2020-09-23
Memory, Sorrow and Thorn has proven an excellent series with one of the finest conclusions I have ever read for an epic fantasy series.
The writing is beautiful, the characters very fleshed out, the conflicts are gripping. The series as a whole does suffer from some pacing issues, with the beginning of the story taking a long time to kick the plot into gear, but any patience needed is rewarded amptly by the conclusion. Every plot thread, and some seem disconnected from the main story for much of the series, is paid off spectacularly.
If you are a fan of epic fantasy, the series is a must read.

A retired group of legendary mercenaries get the band back together for one last impossible mission in this award-winning debut epic fantasy. Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best, the most feared and renowned crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld. Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk, or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay's door with a plea for help - the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for. It's time to get the band back together.

A must-read for any Fantasy lover
Évalué le: 2020-08-01
The story is like an incredible combination of the movie RED (Retired, Extremely Dangerous) and a crazy college Dungeons and Dragons session. The tone, a hillarious combination of the writing style of Joe Abercrombie and Monty Python.
The book inspires scenes of incredible awe and gut busting comedy, sometimes dancing on the line of going over the top, yet miraculously maintains a strong heart and manages to be surprisingly moving.
If you are a fan of the fantasy genre, I cannot recommend this book strongly enough.

The US Constitution was approved by the Constitutional Convention on September 17, 1787. It was to become law only if it was ratified by nine of the 13 states. New York was a key state, but it contained strong forces opposing the Constitution. A series of eighty-five letters appeared in New York City newspapers between October 1787 and August 1788 urging support for the Constitution. These letters remain the first and most authoritative commentary on the American concept of federal government.

A supremely interesting read, especially in today's political climate. The performance/editing is below other audible standards though. The narrator often repeats whole sections and at parts there is distracting background noise.

A slow burn with amazing payoffs
Évalué le: 2020-07-19
To be truly honest, despite high recommendations, this series did not really grab me by the end of book 1. It was good, but not great. I delayed reading book 2 and it wasn't until halfway through the 2nd Novel that the series really seemed to come into its own.
Having just finished the 3rd and final book, the whole series on a whole is excellent. Every set up is paid off in brilliantly creative ways. The slower 1st book is retroactively better having now finished the 3rd.
I highly recommend.

Darkly humorous
Évalué le: 2020-06-09
As with all Abercrombie's work, his characters struggle and suffer in refreshingly realistic selfish way despite the absurdly horrible circumstances. I have never felt worse for fictional characters while laughing harder, and then feeling bad for the laughter.

Sanderson is spot on
Évalué le: 2020-04-16
I've been listening to the WoT series in a row for the first time and was curious how the story would change with the authors. I've read many Sanderson books before, so I had no doubt it was in good hands, but I was still curious.
While there is a minor but distinct difference in the style, Sanderson really knows and loves the characters. All of them feel just as authentic as when they were first introduced.
This book is a particularly poignant chapter in the story. I can't wait to finish the last two.
