Brutally frank but buoyed throughout by McLeod’s unquenchable spirit, Peyakow - a title borrowed from the Cree word for “one who walks alone” - is an inspiring account of triumph against unimaginable odds. McLeod’s perspective as someone whose career path has crossed both sides of the Indigenous/White chasm resonates with particular force in today’s Canada.

Powerful Story but Drags at the End a Bit

This is a very powerful story, and the beginning is quite interesting but it drags toward the end a bit.

Histoire
Malcolm Gladwell, author of New York Times best sellers including Talking to Strangers and host of the podcast Revisionist History, uses original interviews, archival footage, and his trademark insight to weave together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in Central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard. As listeners hear these stories unfurl, Gladwell examines one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.

Great Listening Experience

Loadwell has certainly perfected the art of audio books, and while this is a very interesting story, I don't think it will list among his most thought provoking ones.

Histoire
A mind-expanding and myth-destroying exploration of notions of white race—not merely a skin color but also a signal of power, prestige, and beauty to be withheld and granted selectively. Ever since the Enlightenment, race theory and its inevitable partner, racism, have followed a crooked road, constructed by dominant peoples to justify their domination of others. Filling a huge gap in historical literature that long focused on the non-white, eminent historian Nell Irvin Painter guides us through more than two thousand years of Western civilization, tracing not only the invention of the idea of race but also the frequent worship of “whiteness” for economic, social, scientific, and political ends.

A fascinating and important listen
Évalué le: 2021-06-23
Painter's review of the history of what it means to be white (and by contrast, not) is absolutely brilliant. She underscores in fine detail the History behind so many unspoken presumptions and stereotypes that makes what was once a hidden truth a transparent absurdity. And, Johnson's reading of the text captures the tone and delivery quite well. I wish I had listened to this book years ago!

Histoire
Some Americans cling desperately to the myth that we are living in a post-racial society, that the election of the first Black president spelled the doom of racism. In fact, racist thought is alive and well in America - more sophisticated and more insidious than ever. And as award-winning historian Ibram X. Kendi argues in Stamped from the Beginning, if we have any hope of grappling with this stark reality, we must first understand how racist ideas were developed, disseminated, and enshrined in American society.

Put them together and you have the funniest, most heartfelt, and most inspirational memoir on survival, success, and the importance of believing in yourself since Old Yeller.

Best Book Ever
Évalué le: 2020-12-03
This book made me laugh, cry, and think, sometimes all at the same time and at the end of the same sentence.
The chapter titles are the absolute best for being the absolute worst. But the content of those chapters was always absolutely brilliant.
I am a better and smarter person on the other side of this book. That was a completely unanticipated byproduct of what I thought would be, and also was, a light and funny listen. I don't know how he Kevin Heart accomplished that, but I guess that's part of his success!
Definitely worth a listen.

Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Histoire
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Fascinating Episodic History of Victorian England
Évalué le: 2020-01-19
Fry delivers a fascinating review of various aspects of Victorian life. The delivery intertwines various voices to capture the period and deeply engage the listener, though Fry's narration is sufficiently captivating in it's own right. The focus of the stories is distinctly bourgeois (even in discussing the narratives of colonized people and other 'othered' peoples, the perspective is still rather blatantly focused from the observations of the middle and upper classes). If you can forgive this idiosyncrasy, though, it is an excellent listen.
