the voice of the narrator is too dramatic and over pronounced. I can't possibly sleep for giggling.

Histoire
In many ways, Nona is like other people. She lives with her family, has a job at her local school, and loves walks on the beach and meeting new dogs. But Nona's not like other people. Six months ago she woke up in a stranger's body, and she's afraid she might have to give it back. The whole city is falling to pieces. A monstrous blue sphere hangs on the horizon, ready to tear the planet apart. Blood of Eden forces have surrounded the last Cohort facility and wait for the Emperor Undying to come calling. Their leaders want Nona to be the weapon that will save them from the Nine Houses.

I have no idea what's going on in this series
Évalué le: 2022-12-01
Look, I LOVED Gideon, and thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns in Harrow. But I was just confused by this one. I feel like half my brain must have fallen out, because I don't understand the setup of this book and how it follows the previous ones. I'm off to look up some plot summaries.

Good worldbuilding, dull noir tropes.
Évalué le: 2022-11-04
I want to congratulate Blanchard on such a bold, well-developed project. Her view of a world untouched by colonialism feels real, while still optimistic. It's just unfortunate that the story itself is dull, predictable, and painfully formulaic. Anyone who has ever read a detective novel before will know the ending by the halfway point. The prose, on the other hand, is good; Blanchard uses words well, and they are well-performed here.

Wily, charming Kuni Garu, a bandit, and stern, fearless Mata Zyndu, the son of a deposed duke, seem like polar opposites. Yet in the uprising against the emperor, the two quickly become the best of friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods.

I kept trying to give this the benefit of the doubt. It's emulating an unfamiliar style, I said. It's worth toughing it out. It was not.

Charming little urban fantasy mystery

I'd had this recommended to me a few times and finally dove in. Pretty good stuff. It's "post Gaiman" in a very real way, with a bit of Jim Butcher, and lots of humour.

Histoire
Saul Indian Horse is in critical condition. Sitting feeble in an alcoholism treatment facility, he is told that sharing his story will help relieve his agony. Though skeptical, he embarks on a heartbreaking journey from the present - and into the woods of Northern Ontario, where his life began in a snowy Ojibway camp. The tale that follows is one of great pain and great determination from Richard Wagamese, an author who "never seems to waste a shot" ( New York Times).

Wagamese ought to have been one of our most prolific, most famous poets. Instead, he gave us too few beautiful works and we should treasure them for the truths they tell.

In the absolutely packed Act II, the dark fantasy resumes and the Sandman expands into the French Revolution, ancient Rome, 19th-century San Francisco, eighth-century Baghdad, and beyond. New and familiar characters abound, voiced by a bright mix of performers, including Kat Dennings, Regé-Jean Page, Emma Corrin, Michael Sheen, Kristen Schaal, Brian Cox, John Lithgow, Jeffrey Wright, and so many more, including fan-favorite narrators Simon Vance and Ray Porter.

Boring, predictable
Évalué le: 2021-09-19
What a waste of potential. From an excellent comment comes a dull slog of a story that isn't worth your time or money. If you haven't figured out the ending by the halfway point, then you aren't paying attention. The characters are lifeless and one dimensional, all except one who is introduced late and given nothing to do.

Boring boring boring
Évalué le: 2021-02-16
At about the halfway mark, being bored to tears, I made note of all my predictions about how this would end and jumped ahead to the last two chapters. I was right on every one (though I'm only giving myself half-points in my prediction about Arthur's identity).
Utterly lacking in conflict, and proposing that humanity's worst impulses will just go away with the wave of a pen. Systemic corruption is solved by just looking at it, and bigotry goes away when opposed by the possibility of financial gain. Grappling with significant social evils but written with language more appropriate for a middle-grade novel.
Well-read and performed, for all that.

Phenomenal!
Évalué le: 2021-01-25
When I first saw the title, I thought "Hm, a little on the nose," and it turns out, I was right in the best possible way. This is a book that wears its influences on its sleeve, never shying away from being as intensely Gothic as possible. References to Stoker, Poe, Wollstonecraft Shelley, and Gilman abound, and Moreno-Garcia rewards you for catching them. It's an absolute treat.
