Histoire
In April 1944, Rudolf Vrba became one of the very first Jews to escape from Auschwitz and make his way to freedom—among only a tiny handful who ever pulled off that near-impossible feat. He did it to reveal the truth of the death camp to the world—and to warn the last Jews of Europe what fate awaited them. Against all odds, Vrba and his fellow escapee, Fred Wetzler, climbed mountains, crossed rivers, and narrowly missed German bullets until they had smuggled out the first full account of Auschwitz the world had ever seen.

A MUST READ FOR ALL
Évalué le: 2024-06-25
I thought this was an amazing overview of the life of this very brave man who helped save the lives of many Jewish people, thereby giving them the opportunity to procreate and keep their race alive and well. It is mind-boggling to me how any person could ever treat another human with such evil and disregard for human life, as not just the Nazis, but others invoked upon the Jewish people at this point in history. It deeply saddens me, but I am so grateful the author took the task of writing this book on.
We need to keep the memory of the Holocaust alive and we all need to learn from this. None of us are safe in this world from atrocities such as these people suffered. What can turn seemingly normal human beings into such monsters? We need to do better, we must do better, and keeping the Holocaust alive in our memories and history is a key component of this.
The author does a tremendous job of developing the main character in the story, depicting his intellect, his spirit, his sometimes misguided anger, abruptness or roughness. This helps us to understand the the heart and soul from which Walter (Rudy) operated. He depicted strength of the human spirit few of us could ever hope to achieve. I wish I had met him and known him. It would have been such a privilege to learn from a man such as this. Having said that, we are given the opportunity to do that on another level through this work.
Finally, I really appreciated the mention of documentaries, other texts and scholarly works woven throughout the story, that one can look to for further history on the Holocaust.
To the author, many thanks for your wonderful work!!

On October 1, 1993, a 12-year-old girl was kidnapped at knifepoint from her bedroom in Petaluma, California, during a sleepover with two friends, while her mother slept soundly in the room next door. This rarest of all kidnappings—a stranger abduction from the home—triggered one of the largest manhunts in FBI history. New York Times bestselling author Kim Cross has written the first comprehensive account of what happened on that fateful night in October, as well as how the case forever transformed the Bureau’s approach to solving crimes.

FASCINATING CASE REVIEW & MORE!
Évalué le: 2024-06-04
This was a fascinating and heartbreaking review of all that can go wrong and all that can go right in the abduction and murder of a child. I loved the detailed researched review of this case and the historical review of other cases, changes to forensic and other legal practices and laws that were beautifully woven into the Polly Klass case. I appreciated as well the reference to how some cases receive such national and international attention, while others get very little, often based on race, color, life situation, financial status and more. We need to do better. Every child; every human deserves better. Thank you for a very well researched, educational and informative overview of all of the above.

It was a mistake to trust him. Shivering and bruised, a teen wakes up on the side of a dirt road with no memory of how she got there—or who she is. The police don’t know where she came from until a frantic man arrives at the station. He’s been searching for her for hours. He has her school ID, her birth certificate, and even family photos.

TEENS WOULD LOVE IT!
Évalué le: 2024-06-04
I believe teens would love this book. I myself am far from a teen, and although I enjoyed the book, I did find it a bit repetitive at times, though overall it kept my attention making me want to find out the ending (unexpected for sure). The story was mainly plausible but a bit Nancy Drew at times (now you can guess my age LOL). Having said this, I do believe it would make a great Netflix movie. The narration was great!

AMAZING BOOK!!
Évalué le: 2024-04-08
I love this author who is brilliant, and clearly takes his time with the books he writes. His personal humility comes out in the pages of his books. He seems to have an intimate knowledge of everything he writes about making the story lines, as with this one, warm, engaging and believable. The characters are wonderful and each is unique. I should have written the review right after I read it as I would have more to say, but I loved it and will likely read it again after a few years because it is just so darn good!

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

In The Four Agreements, a New York Times best seller for over seven years, don Miguel Ruiz revealed how the process of our education, or “domestication,” can make us forget the wisdom we were born with. Throughout our lives, we make many agreements that go against ourselves and create needless suffering.

Letting Go describes a simple and effective means by which to let go of the obstacles to enlightenment and become free of negativity. During the many decades of the author's clinical psychiatric practice, the primary aim was to seek the most effective ways to relieve human suffering in all of its many forms. The inner mechanism of surrender was found to be of great practical benefit and is described in this book.

DID NOT FINISH IT ... BECAUSE I NEED TO READ IT!
Évalué le: 2024-04-08
I was really enjoying this book, but there are so many helpful tidbits in it, that I found myself making clip after clip and note after note, thus I felt in this case I needed the physical book! I am looking forward to reading it, underlining it, and making side notes that I can easily go back to. I believe I will then listen to the full book and update the review then! However, I clearly support this book!

Anne Gallagher grew up enchanted by her grandfather’s stories of Ireland. Heartbroken at his death, she travels to his childhood home to spread his ashes. There, overcome with memories of the man she adored and consumed by a history she never knew, she is pulled into another time. The Ireland of 1921, teetering on the edge of war, is a dangerous place in which to awaken. But there Anne finds herself, hurt, disoriented, and under the care of Dr. Thomas Smith, guardian to a young boy who is oddly familiar.

CAN WE CROSS TIMELINES
Évalué le: 2024-04-08
I loved this book. I thought it was beautifully narrated!. The book asks the reader to believe we can cross timelines. It reminds me somewhat (although not entirely), of "The Outlander", a genre I personally like and from this perspective and I found it fascinating. I loved feeling the relationship develop between the 2 callers and thought the author pulled it together beautifully in the end. Very engaging book!

Nando Parrado was unconscious for three days before he woke to discover that the plane carrying his rugby team to Chile had crashed deep in the Andes, killing many of his teammates, his mother, and his sister. Stranded with the few remaining survivors on a lifeless glacier and thinking constantly of his father’s grief, Parrado resolved that he could not simply wait to die. So Parrado, an ordinary young man with no particular disposition for leadership or heroism, led an expedition up the treacherous slopes of a snowcapped mountain and across forty-five miles of frozen wilderness.

FIRST PERSON ACCOUNT OF TRAGEDY & RESILIENCE
Évalué le: 2024-04-08
I watched the most recent movie of this tragic life event "Society of the Snow" and then I listened to this book which brought it all together for me. The book is an amazing overview of the tragedy, loss of life, unbelievable human suffering, strength, perseverance and resilience. It depicts the incredible importance of hope and that never giving up despite having all odds against you, is a human quality that can and does save lives. I so appreciated the raw honesty the author provides from his perspective regarding individual personalities and relationships which are not always pristine of course, but the humility with which he shares them. Having the author provide and personally narrate an overview of where those who survived have been and some still are in life was a treasure to listen to at the end. This author ensured the lives of all those aboard were spoken of, and remembered. He is a gift to his fellow passengers, friends and indeed to humanity and I thank him for this work.
