Michael Butler Murray does a spectacular job for Audible, narrating this biography of a talented artist that we lost too soon. From his humble beginnings to the height of rock superstardom, to his final days, this story is a detailed and poignant look at one of the all-time greats. Without shame, I’ll admit the epilogue had me in tears. A must-listen.

Alex Knox does a great job narrating this tale that apparently has been optioned to Hollywood, and the premise of “Jaws meets Piranha 3D meets Land Of The Lost” should make for a fun movie…but as a book, this was a chore. You would think a story about an earthquake in the fictional mountain town of Lawless, British Columbia would be thrilling, especially when the earthquake reveals an impossible prehistoric ecosystem that unleashes monstrous beasts onto the snowed-in and seemingly helpless locals. But the prose meanders to the point I was yelling “EFFFF THIS” out loud on multiple occasions, and the dialogue is actively ridiculous. The final act is especially disappointing, as words for the sake of words completely bog down multiple showdowns that should be thrilling. I wanted to love this book but the author went out of her way to ensure I would not.

… this book tried to combine Greek mythology with minor science fiction and shapeshifter erotica, all while dealing with human trafficking and unexpected romance. Maybe it was a little too much to bite off in one book, but the background trafficking story was well done and parts of this were both action-packed and sexy. Some of the dialogue is super cringeworthy but there’s more good than bad in this one, and it sets up a sequel nicely.

Also Tatiana Sokolov is a talented narrator for Audible, and she kept the book moving smoothly. I realize these books do not have me as their target audience, but a solid book is a solid book.

Garrison Keillor drags 1940s hard-boiled PI, Guy Noir, into the 21st Century to spoof both the genre and the world at large. Some of it is very funny and some of it is just kinda lame…but overall it’s good for a chuckle. This audible version is definitely a lot of fun with music and hijinks galore…but the joke definitely gets milked too hard.

My introduction to Drizzt was book 2 of the original Crystal Shard trilogy; and despite not having read the first, the book was set up so that you could jump in and hit the ground running. This story does not do that. The first half is like “scenes from last season” review of Drizzt when he first arrived in Icewind Dale, and the second half is us being introduced to his petulant teenage daughter.

The battles are great and there’s some interesting plot points, but then it just ends abruptly. Also the editing by Audible was extremely poor, exposing Victor Bevine and making him sound like a weak narrator…which he is it. Not the best Drizzt tale, but that’s obviously a high bar to keep hitting.

Stephen is a senior collegiate wrestler obsessed with winning a Division IV Championship. As he tries to navigate graduation and wrestling, he finds love, must overcome major adversity…and along the way, goes absolutely insane.

This book is very creative and absurd, but it’s also long-winded and at times, pretentious. The ending is frustrating but smartly done. Florida is like a grappling Holden Caulfied, in that he’s supposed to be an angsty anti-hero but in reality, he’s just a colossal prick that you somehow want to see succeed despite his myriad of glaring flaws.

Will Damron is an absolutely spectacular narrator and keeps you engaged from start to finish.

… the first in the “Her Secret Menagerie” series (currently at 5 books), this is a supernatural romance novel revolving around a rogue werewolf pack that accidentally turns our human heroine, Sadie. Now I don’t *think* I’ve fallen permanently down the erotic monster rabbit hole, but it’s definitely something different.

The sex is…intense, the dialogue is corny and the ending is sappy AF (but sets up a sequel quite well), but underneath all that is actually a smartly done little story. And yes I get all the metaphors that werewolf “mating” is supposed to suggest, but female writers’ obsession with male lupine genitalia is super weird, y’all.

Ed Harris does a great job narrating this novella about a slice of Rhode Island mobster life. It’s funny and tragic, but the ending took a cop-out rushed route that bummed me out…the rest was so good!

Vaz Gettner is a brilliant but socially clueless scientific researcher who is married with two surly teens. When he loses his job after not kissing his new boss’ keister, he stumbles upon a major scientific breakthrough that could literally save the world while ruining his life.

First off, Audible has a gem in Stephen R. Thorne: imagine Ron Howard narrating “Arrested Development” and you’re almost there as to why he’s so entertaining. Now when we first meet Vaz, he’s the shy geek in high school, and while clearly on some sort of spectrum, his need to be babied at work is definitely something you can see a promotion-obsessed new boss not jiving with: new bosses need to wave their proverbial genitals in the air to flex their supposed superiority…especially in a job where the subordinates are clearly more intelligent, talented, etc.

Vaz is also annoying as Hell, and his wife often bears the brunt of his awkwardness. But don’t dismiss him as a weak little geek: he handles his stress with strenuous exercise, so he’s a pretty jacked brainiac.

The science in this one is hard (it explains cold fusion in great detail), and Thorne gets us through it…but it’s very heavy on science. There was also an issue with the writer being obsessed with the word “mewlish” that inundates Chapter Four, which was maddening. In the grand scheme of things, this builds to a violent climax and a fun little ending. Worth a listen.
