Story
In the aftermath of World War II, Prussia - a centuries-old state pivotal to Europe's development - ceased to exist. In their eagerness to erase all traces of the Third Reich from the earth, the Allies believed that Prussia, the very embodiment of German militarism, had to be abolished. But as Christopher Clark reveals in this pioneering history, Prussia's legacy is far more complex.

Good book, poor narration
Reviewed: 2024-08-29
The narrators German pronunciation is terrible - even mine is probably better - and his English pronunciation is pretty peculiar as well. All of that made the book a lot harder to understand and follow, which is too bad as Clark really knows his stuff.

What is our species' greatest invention? Medicine, computers, space travel? Not even close. The innovation that underlies each of our past achievements and those we still aspire to is language. Language is the ultimate invention of Homo sapiens - one that has allowed us to change the physical and social world around us in every conceivable way, and an invention that has fundamentally changed us, as well.

The first ten lectures were great.
Then he got into autism and theory of mind.
I got so angry at his incredibly dehumanising, ableist and outdated perspective (the study by Simon Baron Cohen that he cites is from 1985 and is poorly supported) that I quit in the middle of lcture 11.
This guy is a scientist. He should know , and do, better.

Four stars for the first two lecturers. Two for the third - problems include factual errors, presumptions (maybe other countries aren't actually trying to assimilate immigrants), and describing a female politician as 'shrill'.

Story
Between 1348 and 1715, western Europe was fraught with turmoil, beset by the Black Plague, numerous and bitter religious wars, and frequent political revolutions and upheavals. Yet the Europe that emerged from this was vastly different from the Europe that entered it. By the start of the 18th century, Europe had been revitalized and reborn in a radical break with the past that would have untold ramifications for human civilization.

This is really not up to Great Courses standards. It's full of errors and rumours treated as facts, along with some really odd pronunciations (e.g. papal like apple). If I'd spent a credit on this, I'd be furious.

Story
The relentless pursuit of high self-esteem has become a virtual religion - and a tyrannical one at that. Our ultracompetitive culture tells us we need to be constantly above average to feel good about ourselves, but there is always someone more attractive, successful, or intelligent than we are. And even when we do manage to grab hold of high self-esteem for a brief moment, we can't seem to keep it. Our sense of self-worth goes up and down like a ping-pong ball, rising and falling in lockstep with our latest success or failure.
