Story
With only one bastion still standing on the once unconquerable fortress world of Aranua, Warboss Gazrot Goresnappa should be basking in the light of impending victory. Instead, he lies ‘proppa dead’ beneath a decapitated Gargant’s head. The biggest and baddest bosses from each of the six (no-longer-united) clans step forward to duke it out to become the next warboss – but the ork gods have other plans. A prophecy foretells of a mysterious gate that lies beneath the human city. The one true warboss will be the first to find it, and will use it to turn the galaxy green.

It's awesome. The writing and narration are both strong. Each of the characters has their own personality that comes across. Things move along at a fast pace in the plot and story. There is some dark humour in parts that was well incorporated. The action parts are intense and well executed. Satisfying listen overall.

Story
Among the ashes of a dying world, an agent of the Commandment finds a letter. It reads: Burn before reading. Thus begins an unlikely correspondence between two rival agents hellbent on securing the best possible future for their warring factions. Now, what began as a taunt, a battlefield boast, becomes something more. Something epic. Something romantic. Something that could change the past and the future. Except the discovery of their bond would mean the death of each of them. There’s still a war going on, after all. And someone has to win. That’s how war works, right?

weirdly moving.

It's high concept and packed with a lot of ideas, and is a fairly intricate, complicated, and involved piece of storytelling. The characters at the centre of it are agents from opposing sides of a time war who develop something between them in the course of their endeavours. For how sci-fi and high concept the and story and setting is, and characters are, the central connection that develops between these characters is oddly moving. This is a really unique book. I don't think it will be for everyone, but it could be one of the more satisfying and interesting rides you've experienced if you give it a chance. There is a really beautiful simplicity and purity at the heart of it all.

These are solid little tales from Cain's career. There is a nice variety of subject matter and Jurgen's perspective shows up for the first time which was fun. Some are better than others but all were enjoyable to some degree. A few areas of backstory are filled in for Cain that have been referenced in passing in other books. This is probably not a great starting point for new listeners but a great one worth picking up if you enjoy the character and his series.

Story
When Unit Four - a biological soft robot built and stored high above the Jovian atmosphere - is activated for the first time, it’s in crisis mode. Aliens are attacking the Helium-3 mine it was created to oversee, and now its sole purpose is to defend Earth’s largest energy resource from the invaders in ship-to-ship combat. But something’s wrong. Unit Four doesn’t feel quite right. There are files in its databanks it can’t account for, unusual chemical combinations roaring through its pipes, and the primers it possesses on the aliens are suspiciously sparse.

This one is pretty unique. It feels like it successfully pulls off being a smaller scale, small stakes kind of story while at the same time touching on the bigger scope of an interesting setting. The character work was good. It's fast paced. There are a lot of neat ideas going on. The mysteries and unknowns of the main character play out in a neat way. No complaints here and it was everything I wanted from an audiobook. Satisfying overall. Worth the listen.

Story
What will become of our self-destructed planet? The answer shatters all expectations in this subversive speculation from the Hugo Award - winning author of the Broken Earth trilogy. An explorer returns to gather information from a climate-ravaged Earth that his ancestors, and others among the planet’s finest, fled centuries ago. The mission comes with a warning: A graveyard world awaits him. But so do those left behind - hopeless and unbeautiful wastes of humanity who should have died out ages ago.

Story
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv, the orc barbarian, cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city's ever seen. However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners, and a different kind of resolve.

Cozy coffee fantasy
Reviewed: 2024-02-17
It's much better than I thought it would be. An adventurer tired of the grind puts down her sword to set up a coffee shop. This sounds like it could be slow. I wouldn't say it's not slow, but there is rich characterization and enough intrigue to keep things moving along. The satisfaction is in the vicarious enjoyment of seeing the main character face her various challenges while developing trust in and receiving the support of those around her. It's not high fantasy, but it is cozy fantasy. The feeling of a pleasant and comfortable coffee shop is successfully evoked. There is a good tension brought out between the life the main character used to lead and the life she wants to lead and is trying to lead now. I appreciated the humble nature of the story. Best comparison I can think of is that it's like a fantasy version of the "Wayfarer" series of books by Becky Chambers. It's all characters taking care of each other and the small dramas of humble quiet life.

Then his long-lost uncle Jake dies and leaves his supervillain business (complete with island volcano lair) to Charlie. But becoming a supervillain isn't all giant laser death rays and lava pits.

This was an unexpectedly great listen. I wasn't sure what to expect and got a sold story about death, quarter life crisis, billionaire villains, and cats with hidden depths. The narration is good and suits the material. The material is fast paced, humorous, compelling, easy to listen to and hard to put down. If you like and/or own cats you'll probably get extra appreciation out of some aspects of this. There is a lot to like.

Braving the foetid waters of Bacchus and its rampaging greenskin hordes, Simlex is tasked with producing a cinema-pict portraying Shard as an Imperial hero. Shortly after his arrival planetside, however, he discovers the war effort is in shambles.

This is a pretty good one. The story and characters stand out as having some depth and interest. It was a compelling listen and hard to put down. The narration is solid and suits the material. The subject matter felt unique since the story is about an imperial propagandist trying to come to terms with the actual war versus what his work needs to be and the nature of the ace pilot he follows. It's also different in the sense there are no Space Marines, Inquisition, Imperial Guard as the primary characters. It's more about the average people of the 40k universe which gave it a unique aspect as far as stories set in this universe. I would read more by the author and listen to more of the narrators work. Worth giving a try.

It's a good time. It is a military sci-fi but I thought more of a drama than an action one. It doesn't suffer for that though, the characters and setting are good, and there is still an enjoyable amount of action in the right places. It's fast paced and easy to listen to. Thematically it's about someone having to rise to leadership in a crisis and how they approach that, which was done in a satisfying and compelling way. If you're familiar with Michael Mammay's other books I think it's less heavy, serious, and noir than the Planetside series can be, but not quite as light as "The Misfit Soldier", so a good balance. Worth the time.

It's pretty fun. I thought some parts were a little slow, but overall the main character is well done and compelling, it's easy to listen to, the narration performance is solid, and there is a good level of ambiguity about what is really going on. I thought the ending was a little too easy and I was hoping for more but overall still cared enough about the main character that it was satisfying and the journey getting to the ending was enjoyable.
