Too detailed, too repetitive and dull for my taste. Couldn't get past 3 hrs, and it is 35hrs long! Not for the average non-literary person I think.

A good book may have the power to change the way we see the world, but a great book actually becomes part of our daily consciousness, pervading our thinking to the point that we take it for granted, and we forget how provocative and challenging its ideas once were - and still are. The Structure of Scientific Revolutions is that kind of book.

New perspective on science
Reviewed: 2024-11-22
Even as an avid science reader, I found this book difficult to read. It drags on at first, it is bit dry for a layman like myself. I would suggest skipping the preface essay (which is an hour long I think).
If you stick through it, and finish the book you will most certainly gain a new perspective on paradigms, on scientific revolutions and how science functions in general.

Story
Infinite Powers recounts how calculus tantalized and thrilled its inventors, starting with its first glimmers in ancient Greece and bringing us right up to the discovery of gravitational waves. Strogatz reveals how this form of math rose to the challenges of each age: how to determine the area of a circle with only sand and a stick; how to explain why Mars goes "backwards" sometimes; how to turn the tide in the fight against AIDS.

Am not a mathematician but I certainly enjoyed every bit of it. The author weaves an intriguing story taking us on a journey through the ages with Calculus as the guide. It is simplified enough for regular people like myself to grasp and appreciate the beauty of Calculus. Bravo.

Story
Neil deGrasse Tyson has a talent for guiding readers through the mysteries of outer space with stunning clarity and almost childlike enthusiasm. This collection of his essays from Natural History magazine explores a myriad of cosmic topics. Tyson introduces us to the physics of black holes by explaining what would happen to our bodies if we fell into one; he also examines the needless friction between science and religion, and notes Earth's status as "an insignificantly small speck in the cosmos".

Great book on a wide assorted range of topics. I felt it was quite an unfocussed book of Dr.Tyson. I loved his other books. Despite the title, it has surprisingly less to do with Black holes. Please just half a chapter. In any case, the final few chapters are the best parts of the book. Worth a read, but not a "must read".

Story
In this fascinating foray into the centuries-old relationship between science and military power, acclaimed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and writer-researcher Avis Lang examine how the methods and tools of astrophysics have been enlisted in the service of war. "The overlap is strong, and the knowledge flows in both directions," say the authors, because astrophysicists and military planners care about many of the same things: multi-spectral detection, ranging, tracking, imaging, high ground, nuclear fusion, and access to space. Tyson and Lang call it a "curiously complicit" alliance.
