Story
Nineteen-year-old Signa Farrow, orphaned as a baby, has been raised by a string of guardians, each more interested in her wealth than her well-being—and each has met an untimely end. Her last remaining relatives are the Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at the glittering and gloomy estate of Thorn Grove. Thorn Grove’s patriarch, Elijah, mourns his late wife, Lillian, through wild parties and drink, while eldest son Percy grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation and daughter Blythe suffers from the same mysterious illness that killed her mother.

Unexpected twists

I enjoyed the book, easy to follow and spend hours listening to it. The reader made a nice interpretation of the characters and read at a pleasant rhythm.
The characters were interesting and charming. Signa's special powers are so cool, but I would have liked to know a bit more about her early years. I loved death's character but I would have liked it to be a bit darker. Can't wait to read the next book.

Story
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Not bad, but I didn't love it

I was expecting a lot from this book, but I was a little disappointed. It's not a bad book, but maybe not as exciting as it could have been. The story and the characters were so interesting and could have been much better developed, but most of the book keeps repeating (in my opinion) unnecessary details. I was bored by the 2/3 of the book but finished it anyway. The end was neither shoking nor exciting.

Story
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Amazing!

I'm a microbiology nerd, and I just couldn't have enough of microbiology and science facts.
This book was exciting from beginning to end, amazing story, beautiful creation of the worlds, and very nice development of the characters.
All that, plus the performance, were just perfect!
I rarely give 5 stars to a book, but this is the kind of book I love and I will keep among my favorites.
