I liked this novel a lot. The writing was interesting and the characters were strong; the narration was also fantastic. The ending was pretty obvious, tbh, but there were enough twists and turns throughout that I was never bored nor was the story overly trite. Would definitely recommend!

This is instantly one of my favourite books. It's smart, dark and funny, captivating as hell, excellently narrated, and exceptionally written. It's almost the radical queer inverse of Yellowface, which is everything. F*cking brilliant.

So the story is well narrated and the prose is compelling and often beautiful, if not hauntingly so, but the ending is pretty obvious and then there's a couple plot twists that are random-ish and not well integrated/developed. Also, and a bit of a spoiler alert, but the book is weirdly offensive and conservative. The white guys end up being heros and overly sympathetic, the only Black Lesbian character, and poor sister, is not only the killer but a stocker and sociopath (played out queerphobic trope). Also the ony featured Black husband is a cheater and the plot is kinda irrelevant. The book feels like it was written by two authors with two different stories and that it had a problematic white editor who f*cked it up. I do not get it, but I did listened to the whole thing.

I really enjoyed this novel. It mirrors the way that domestic abuse escalates and exposes itself to victims/survivors and uses that mirroring to drive the suspense and intrigue of the novel. It has the typical surreal/dramatic elements of domestic thrillers that makes them captivating while also creating real and relatable characters struggling with real and relatable issues around abuse, sexism, and power. It was a bit too (albeit subtly) pro cop for me, especially because it's Canadian and the narrator is a PhD student studying domestic abuse (as a Canadian with a doctorate in the social sciences and who examines violence I don't believe this is a realistic perspective for her to have) but otherwise it's good. The narrator is also great; highly recommend.

One of my favourite books by the author, the suspense was fantastic, and the narrator was good, but the editing for it is so bad and takes away from the overall impact

It's not my favourite book by the author, but not as bad at some reviews suggest. First, the narrator is really good and a lot better than sone of the narrators this author has had, idk what everyone's beef is with her. Second, the story is interesting, it's just a bit slower, and similar to a lot of her other plots. But if you like this author, I'd recommend the novel.

I've read most of this authors book and this one might be the most cleverly written one. The level of detail that had to go into making the story consistent and the ending unpredictable, or at least not trite, is really impressive, and the narration is fantastic-my only critique is that I wish the whole book was in first person present tense, and also there were these two random ass moments where the second person narrator goes into first person narration and it's hella confusing. It honestly seemed like an editing/publishing error. But besides that, highly recommend!

This is one of my favourite books by this author. It's hard to write something entertaining and fresh within the ground hog format of this novel but she does it well. It also has a smart anti domestic violence + disability justice message that I've seen elsewhere in one of her books and which she is good at. It's a thoughtful and captivating book. Also great narrator. Definitely recommend!

A few people commented that this book isn't as good as the first two books and I strongly disagree. If you know the author's writing, the twist in book one is pretty obvious and the second book follows the exact same formula of book one just in reverse. Book three, however, is richer and has enough going on where you don't see everything coming right away. Also, I really enjoyed following Millie and her family over time and the throw backs to book one. Great way to end am enjoyable series!

Disability Justice Suspense

This is different from Freida Mcfadden's usual MO but in a good way. Usually her books are driven by plot and an unexpected twist, which is great, but her character development isn't that strong (although not always) and there isn't really a bigger meaning or idea in the story. It's just a good, psychological story. But in this book, the twist is pretty predictable, but it's OK because that's not the point. The strength lies in the perspective and how the author makes you feel the horror of being completely dependent on an abusive man as a disabled woman and the embodied struggles of recovering from a traumatic brain injury. She plays with themes of memory and identity, disability justice, and domestic abuse and you feel deeply connected to the main character, even though she's disconnected from herself. The book is also excellently narrated. I was pleasantly surprised and would definitely recommend this novel.
