Story
Countess Ellen Olenska, separated from her European husband, returns to old New York society. She bears with her an independence and an awareness of life which stirs the educated sensitivity of the charming Newland Archer, engaged to be married to her cousin, May Welland. Though he accepts the society's standards and rules he is acutely aware of their limitations. He knows May will assure him a conventional future but Ellen, scandalously separated from her husband, forces Archer to question his values and beliefs.

Great!

Don't be put off from this version by the fact that the narrator is English. David Horovitch (Grand Maester Mellos on House of the Dragon among other things) gives a wonderfully sensitive, gentle reading of this gentle, sensitive novel, and his American accent for character voices is, if not outstanding, perfectly serviceable and not at all distracting. The mastering is a bit quiet but the recording and production are superb; this is one of the best-sounding plus catalogue listens I've heard.

Story
When Michael Moorcock began chronicling the adventures of the albino sorcerer Elric, last king of decadent Melniboné, and his sentient vampiric sword, Stormbringer, he set out to create a new kind of fantasy adventure, one that broke with tradition and reflected a more up-to-date sophistication of theme and style. The result was a bold and unique hero: a rock-and-roll antihero who would channel all the violent excesses of the '60s into one enduring archetype.

Great stuff, but misleading cover

I've only just started listening to this, but I thought I should let people know that while the cover says "foreword by Neil Gaiman", what's actually included is Gaiman's previously available short story "One Life, Furnished in Early Moorcock". It's a good story and its inclusion here makes a kind of sense, but it's not a foreword.

Moominvalley in November is one of the most important books I ever read as a child. It expanded my idea of what books could be like, and I'm not sure I've ever found one quite like it since. Hugh Dennis' performance is delightful; his array of UK regional accents all suit the characters well, even when they're not quite how I imagined them. Essential children's literature.
