Editing mistakes in Part 2
Reviewed: 2024-11-09
Several, at least 3, sections were repeated at least twice or more. I made a mess of the story line. I would like to get an new copy after the mistakes are corrected.
The story is very well done and performance has excellent. It makes a wonderful addition to the Chosen series especially when you can't watch the videos. I'm getting the audiobook series.

Story
Seth Hubbard is a wealthy man dying of lung cancer. He trusts no one. Before he hangs himself from a sycamore tree, Hubbard leaves a new, handwritten, will. It is an act that drags his adult children, his Black maid, and Jake into a conflict as riveting and dramatic as the murder trial that made Brigance one of Ford County's most notorious citizens, just three years earlier. The second will raises far more questions than it answers. Why would Hubbard leave nearly all of his fortune to his maid? Had chemotherapy and painkillers affected his ability to think clearly?

Story
Chris Harman describes the shape and course of human history as a narrative of ordinary people forming and re-forming complex societies in pursuit of common human goals. Interacting with the forces of technological change as well as the impact of powerful individuals and revolutionary ideas, these societies have engendered events familiar to every schoolchild-from the empires of antiquity to the world wars of the 20th century. In a bravura conclusion, Chris Harman exposes the reductive complacency of contemporary capitalism.

A history for those who don't want to know history
Reviewed: 2022-10-02
History is not nice and clear cut. It is messy, full of contradictions, missing information. The author has his idea of what is history and makes no effort to verify his basic concept of history. He rejects out of hand sources that disagree with him them accepts the same sources when they do agree with him. There is no discussion of wide ranging research that has been done in the last 50 years. It is like he read only very poor high school history book for research. It was a painful book to listen to. DO NOT GIVE THIS BOOK TO ANYONE AS THEIR FIRST HISTORY BOOK.

More twists & turns than a den of snakes

And most of those snakes are of the more poisonous two legged variety. This is a good trial novel but also an excellent look at human nature. This book was very hard to put down. If you like twists in your plot, this is your book.

History is a fragile thing. What becomes "history" depends; who wrote it, when it was written, why it written, and what evidence was available to the writer. Add to that is the roll of the dice that goes with any decision. Nothing like a couple of historians to discuss the what, why, and why not that is history.

Story
The Shongairi conquered Earth. In mere minutes, half the human race died, and our cities lay in shattered ruins. But the Shongairi didn't expect the survivors' tenacity. And, crucially, they didn't know that Earth harbored two species of intelligent, tool-using bipeds. One of them, long-lived and lethal, was hiding in the mountains of eastern Europe, the subject of fantasy and legend. When they emerged and made alliance with humankind, the invading aliens didn't stand a chance. Now, a select few blood-drinking immortals are on their way to the Shongairi homeworld.

A flawed hero
Reviewed: 2021-09-04
First, a great biography of a great if flawed man. Born a wealthy noble but an orphan who from a very young age believed in social equality. As a teenager, he disobeyed the king of France to join the American Revolution and died an elderly hero praised in the Americas and Europe.
Second, a brilliantly written and told story by Mike Duncan. Mr. Duncan is a podcaster who's History of Rome and Revolutions podcasts are among the best, if not the best, history podcasts available. To those who have heard Mike before, you know what joys await, and to those who haven't, prepare for a wonderful experience.
Third, for those who think that this will be "just" a popular history, don't worry, Mr. Duncan has done his research. His portrait is of a flawed man who holds firm in most of his convictions.

In the best-selling tradition of The Swerve and A Distant Mirror, The Verge tells the story of a period that marked a decisive turning point for both European and world history. Here, author Patrick Wyman examines two complementary and contradictory sides of the same historical coin: the world-altering implications of the developments of printed mass media, extreme taxation, exploitative globalization, humanistic learning, gunpowder warfare, and mass religious conflict in the long term, and their intensely disruptive consequences in the short-term.

Story
Imperial Intelligence couldn't find them, the Imperial Fleet couldn't catch them, and local defenses couldn't stop them. It seemed the planet-wrecking pirates were invincible. But they made a big mistake when they raided ex-commando leader Alicia DeVries' quiet home/work, tortured and murdered her family, and then left her for dead. Alicia decided to turn "pirate" herself, and stole a cutting-edge AI ship from the empire to start her vendetta. Her fellow veterans think she's gone crazy, the Imperial Fleet has shoot-on-sight orders. And, of course, the pirates want her dead, too.

A 1 woman wreaking team who will not let anything stand in the way of justice. A gripping story of the few sent to protect the many and that is just the first half of the book and only the backstory for the second half of the book: the 1 woman meets 2 other ladies (using the term very loosely) and they are as exceptional as she. The bad guys have no idea what is heading their way.
A typical David Weber novel: lots of action held together by an excellent plot but also full of social, economic, cultural, and political issues that give his books such staying power and depth.
