Quickly tips into Christian propaganda

The typical Christian: "our way or the highway" view of the world and how to improve it and yourself. It really should be made clear that this is a religious tract and I can hardly be bothered to highlight the obvious flaw in the argument that so many of the world's great doers and thinkers over the last couple of millennia have been believers... duh! You would have either been burned at the stake, ducked in a witching pond or horrifically tortured ( by Christians! ) if you had said you were anything other than a believer.

Incredibly insipid and tainted views expressed in this book. Needless to say I didn't finish it

Ok so the headline is a bit harsh. The story itself and the material it deals with are totally up my alley: outdoor disasters, adventures gone wrong etc. but the prose style seems archaic and a bit pompous ( the author is a former school teacher... nuff said, lol ) The narrator is the final anachronism which consigns this audiobook to the plus catalogue. It's overly long and the fact that the author constantly gives away the endings to many of the stories herein makes the whole thing fall flat. That and his clear antagonism to French Canadians leaves the whole experience as a deux étoiles! That was a joke btw and to be fair I did finish the book as background listening at work.

It's hard to say I enjoyed a book covering this subject matter but I do appreciate what the author has done. He takes us on the roller coaster ( of his partners mental illness ) with him and his family members and he describes the ups and downs really succinctly.

The reader was a little off tone at times but you can't really fault him, the story is so personal and traumatic it would be exhausting to hit every nuance.

Overall It's a really good book IMHO. A story worth telling, well told.

P.s. I'm glad to know that they are all still doing well 🙏🏻

I thought I might get some inspiration from this book while listening on my weekly long run but about 45 minutes in and it's still apologizing and trying to justify itself having even been written. I do see the irony of me sounding like a drag-Karen complaining about a book on mindfulness but jeez ... get on with it already! I can see why it's available for free. Deleted from library.... "NEXT!"

There's only so much you can really do with a story about a guy running so I never expect too much. Still this guy is has done a LOT of running, all over the world and he can tell a story and keep it somewhat interesting. However...the narration is appalling ( to my ears at least ). This guy sounds like poor man's Clint Eastwood and John Wayne combined. The performance has almost made me give up a couple of times already and I'm only half way through! It's SO overbaked and cheesy....it's hard to take.

I don't want to be too negative but listening to this brought more of a face palm than a high five. It's SO contrived... take one simple idea and repeat it over and over to fill the pages of a slim book using the same formula as your previous one(s). This was cringe worthy and obviously just a "wash, rinse, repeat" self help author's money grab. It's infantile and I'm glad I bought it on a Audible "Daily Deal".

I listened to this novel in one mammoth session. The story maintains a good pace ( although maybe not the most original of storylines ) and the narrator does a superb job. There's a good twist at the end and overall I really enjoyed the whole experience. A great audiobook, tragic but not mawkish.

I'm a Theroux fan and have been for years but since I've been away from the U.K for a long time I've lost touch with a lot of his more recent work. This book was a great review of his early years and his path to becoming a big name in documentaries. it's a bit heavy on the Saville stuff ( and if you're not from the U.K you probably don't even know who that creep was ) but even so I really enjoy the content of the book and the pace of the reading. That's Theroux's thing though, you feel like it's just some breezy light hearted thing he's talking about but there's a lot more too it under the surface. A great audiobook imho.

Knowledgeable, engaging, humorous telling of how stress affects the body and mind. Brilliant audiobook/ course that I listened to in two days. Sapolski is just the perfect presenter of what might otherwise be some pretty dry material. Loved it!
