Between 1917 and 1921 a devastating struggle took place in Russia following the collapse of the Tsarist empire. The doomed White alliance of moderate socialists and reactionary monarchists stood little chance against Trotsky’s Red Army and the single-minded Communist dictatorship under Lenin.

Could have been more strategic
Reviewed: 2022-10-08
Although it’s interesting to hear (some) of the detailed nitty gritty and this history does give historical perspective to the current conflict, I would have liked a more strategic take on the conflict and how other countries and leaders were involved in this historic conflict.

Story
Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of World War II. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, The Second World War. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on World War II.

Herman Wouk's sweeping epic of World War II, which begins with The Winds of War and continues here in War and Remembrance, stands as the crowning achievement of one of America's most celebrated storytellers. Like no other books about the war, Wouk's spellbinding narrative captures the tide of global events - and all the drama, romance, heroism, and tragedy of World War II - as it immerses us in the lives of a single American family drawn into the very center of the war's maelstrom.

One of the greatest works of historical fiction ever written
Reviewed: 2021-06-10
I’ve read the book, watched the mini-series and now listened to the audio book. Set during the most traumatic period of modern history, it chronicles the highs and low of the human spirit and shows how the course of human history hung in the balance. If you like the story, try and find and watch the mini-series; again, one of the best ever made.

A Classic Story by Wouk

This book might appeal more to those who lived through WWII or those who are simply facinated by the Era, however I would highly recommend it to anyone as a superb piece of historical fiction. Great character development and personal stories set astride the key events of the pre-war and war years. You will need to listen to War and Remembrance to complete this great story.

Why we think it’s a great listen: You thought he was a stodgy scientist with funny hair, but Isaacson and Hermann reveal an eloquent, intense, and selfless human being who not only shaped science with his theories, but politics and world events in the 20th century as well. Based on the newly released personal letters of Albert Einstein, Walter Isaacson explores how an imaginative, impertinent patent clerk became the mind reader of the creator of the cosmos.

Engaging and Well-Researched
Reviewed: 2021-04-11
I enjoyed this book because it dealt primarily with Albert Einstein the person, rather than delving deeply into the physics, although it does cover the latter topic in a suitable manner. The book is well-researched and the narration by Hermann is good. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a great historical figure and wants to know more about his life and the forces that shaped his thinking. It kept me engaged to the very end.

Story
Everyone would benefit from seeing further into the future, whether buying stocks, crafting policy, launching a new product, or simply planning the week's meals. Unfortunately, people tend to be terrible forecasters. As Wharton professor Philip Tetlock showed in a landmark 2005 study, even experts' predictions are only slightly better than chance. However, an important and underreported conclusion of that study was that some experts do have real foresight.

Overall, somewhat disappointing

This could/should have been a much better book. On the one hand, there is a lot of detail without a very concise summary of the key points. The many anecdotes were historically interesting without contributing enormously to the key points raised in the book. More specifically, with the political anecdotes, the book does not discuss how politicians use personal political judgement to overlay the baseline forecast to end up with their decision, does not discuss how the act of measurement, as in a political poll can affect future outcomes and really does not discuss at all how 'success' in forecasting is actually measured.

The best and the worst of humanity

If there is a list of ten books everyone should read by the time they are 18, this book must be on it. If this point in our history had turned the other way, and it easily could have if we had been missing a Churchill or a Roosevelt, the dark side of our nature would have prevailed and destroyed the human spirit. There are some really tough sections of this book to get through because of the horrific acts they describe, but force yourself through them. We only have to read about these acts, while the lives of the less fortunate stain the pages of human history.

If you like the period and the topic, you'll enjoy this detailed (and pretty balanced) history of the various crusades.
I knew the names of some of the key players so it was interesting to get a more detailed (and accurate) account of them and their actions during the crusades. My only disapppointment was a total lack of detail or insight on the 'Children's Crusade' which the author discounted as one of the crusade's to be counted.

It a good podcast about the overt fact of Putin's rise to power, which I enjoyed and recommend, however I did note the absence of any 'inside' detail which would help to explain why and how this 'nobody' apparently rose so suddently and dramatically to be President of Russia. Perhaps that's only a story that Putin could tell.
