Story
Carolyn Pickles retraces the true story of how 11 people came to be brutally cut with a deadly sharp implement, in a spate of attacks that left a town in a state of fear and police mystified about the identity of the attacker. Halifax, West Yorkshire, 1938 and the hunt is on for a razor-wielding attacker, possibly a murderer. The papers name him 'The Halifax Slasher'. A huge reward is offered for leads to his arrest. Vigilante groups form, and innocent men are set upon. Baffled, police argue with each other about how to catch the suspect.

I did not like the narration. I was confused at times who was speaking.
The story was not anything shocking. It had twists but they’re pretty basic and easily guessable. I was 2 hours in when I guessed what would happen. It’s pretty basic.
All of the characters are unlikable and you’re not rooting for anyone and you’re not invested to what happens to anyone. I found the main guy and his partner, Claire absolutely unbearable.

Story
Paul Davis is hearing some very strange noises in the night. He hears the clickety-click of a manual typewriter - as if someone is vigorously tapping the keys. The eerie sounds began soon after his wife, Charlotte, bought him a classic antique Underwood. But only Paul can hear the noises. Eight months ago, he stumbled upon Connecticut's infamous "Apology Killer" - a psychopath who forced his victims to typewrite personal apologies to him before he cut their throats - disposing of two mutilated bodies on Milford's Post Road. Most shocking of all, the killer was his colleague, someone he thought he knew.

Good narrator, good story. I wasn’t particularly surprised by any of the “twists” they were a bit predictable but overall it’s a good listen.

Story
The perfect neighborhood can be the perfect place to hide… Who wouldn’t want to live in Brighton Hills? This exclusive community on the Oregon coast is the perfect mix of luxury and natural beauty. Stunning houses nestle beneath mighty Douglas firs, and lush backyards roll down to the lakefront. It’s the kind of place where neighbors look out for one another. Sometimes a little too closely…

The story is good, nothing shocking but it is an enjoyable story. However, the narration is AWFUL. I always listen to the sample before buying but it’s not a good representation. She made all the characters sound unbearably annoying. It was hard to listen to, and kind of makes you hate the characters. She has this way of saying some vowels very slowly. It’s a very odd way of speaking. If you want to read the story, I’d recommend actually reading this one.

Slow paced
Reviewed: 2023-08-08
It’s just barely a thriller/mystery. It’s super slow paced and the mystery isn’t solved for ten long years. There’s zero good police work in this book. They stumble upon everything they learn and Shelby relies entirely on her gut.
I found a lot of the characters hard to differentiate as the voices are the same. Listening to Anna whine is absolutely painful.

For 15 years, Lexi and Jake have played the same six numbers with their friends. Over drinks, dinner parties and summer barbecues, the three couples have discussed the important stuff — kids, marriages, careers — and they’ve laughed off their disappointment when they failed to win anything.

Not really a thriller/mystery
Reviewed: 2023-08-04
The characters are all unlikeable, Jake is unbearable! Calling it a mystery/thriller is incredibly misleading. It’s literally just about a lottery win until there’s only 3.5 hours left. There’s a couple little surprises in the final hours… but they’re not at all surprising. There is one at the very end that’s surprising, but irrelevant when you finally learn it.
Also the Toma story-line, and the bathroom scene…. Why??? It was a lot of filler.
I would absolutely listen to this narrator again. I also liked the writing, the story was just very boring.

Story
Some lines should never be crossed. Police corruption, an investigation that ends in tragedy and the mystery of a little girl’s silence – three unconnected events that will prove to be linked by one small town. While detective Cormac Reilly faces enemies at work and trouble in his personal life, garda Peter Fisher is relocated out of Galway with the threat of prosecution hanging over his head. But even that is not as terrible as having to work for his overbearing father, the local copper for the pretty seaside town of Roundstone.

I absolutely love listening to anything narrated by Alice McMahon. Dervla books never disappoint. I will say I found a lot of the characters in this really unlikeable but maybe that’s building on the corruption in the force story line.
