Waited for the story and characters to develop until literally to the last chapter. Big mistake. I was surprised with the lack of reviews, now I know why. This book is like riding a bicycle for 27 hrs with a flat tire.

Story
“You like it darker? Fine, so do I,” writes Stephen King in the afterword to this magnificent new collection of twelve stories that delve into the darker part of life—both metaphorical and literal. King has, for half a century, been a master of the form, and these stories, about fate, mortality, luck, and the folds in reality where anything can happen, are as rich and riveting as his novels, both weighty in theme and a huge pleasure to digest.

I do like it darker but it is definitely not…
Reviewed: 2024-05-28
Lovely bedtime stories, nothing more.
Nice writing but there is no dark here, barely grey.
Will Patton saved this book from being average. I’m a fan for life, this book will not change that but if you like it darker, don't hold your breath… it’s not.
P.s.: the last 6-ish hrs. are very good, The last 2 stories will leave you wanting more. Those carried so much promise of taking this book to the dark side but just too short and sadly it’s over before they reached the right temperature, Could have been developed into two fantastic full length books.

Mysterious gateways are appearing throughout the universe, bridging violent civilizations, leading to war, and sowing chaos. While some species succumb to the pandemonium, the Chut’un forge an unholy symbiotic relationship—The Order—with red Europhids, a vast hive intelligence populating the universe’s far reaches. Desiring structure and fearing the unknown, they cull everything opposed to their plan, including the Europhids’ blue counterparts, carrying out a galactic genocide until only one blue Europhid remains...inside Moses Montgomery, a.k.a. Story
The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

I’ll miss this crew, can’t believe it’s over. Time to restart the whole series I guess. I want Skippy for Christmas…but the ending wrapped up a bit too fast. I was hoping to hear how Earth’s leadership digests all this info. If they would harvest any of it and just what will Skippy and crew think up next. I’m really hoping for more but if it ends here I’m satisfied.

Still not sure how I feel about this piece. The story is interesting enough to try book 3, see if it gets better. Helps that the narrator is my favorite. Not sure if I could’ve gone through these books if it wasn’t for his voice which I simply adore. Having said that, I wouldn’t spend full price or credit on this series.
Read it at min 1.1x, anything slower is unbearable.

Story
The philosopher asks: "Faced with the mutually exclusive choice between moral principle and the survival of your family, which is the correct path?" Philosophers love to pose such questions, and in the day-to-day struggle, such thinkers rarely attain to a level of relevance rivaling that of the simple hunger pang. Their careful considerations dissipate under the leveled gun. We do not feel their disapproving gaze when The Others draw near. When the world sends doom, the survivors do not hesitate. The survivors do what is necessary.

I’ve read a number of books in this category.
Find this author after coming across another of his book titled “ All gifts bestowed “ that I really enjoyed. So I thought I’ll get this one too, especially because you can’t go wrong with the narrator (one of the best)
This series will be my favorite for a while and one that I won’t remove from my device as I wouldn’t mind reading/hearing again. Can’t wait for book 5.
