Story
The year is 1880. Two hundred years after the trials in Salem, witches Adelaide Thom and Eleanor St Clair finally feel safe and have opened a tea shop in Manhattan, specialising in cures, palmistry and potions. When an enchanting young woman called Beatrice joins the witches as an apprentice, she soon proves indispensable, but her new life is marred by strange occurrences. She sees things no one else can see. She hears voices no one else can hear. Objects appear out of thin air, as if gifts from the dead.

I think it's a setup for the series?
Reviewed: 2025-03-25
Mostly it comes down to an innocuous story about three witches who end up finding each other there's no real action until the last few chapters and then it ends as a setup for the series. The narrator is very good and brings the characters to life.I haven't decided yet if it was interesting enough to go for the next book in the series.

Reviewed: 2025-03-08
The first book in the series was very enjoyable because it was introducing you to a New world. in this book there is the big war between the two factions. there are lots of action scenes but any non-action seems just feel like filler. in the first book it felt like there were more advantages to having the Alien parasite reside within a character but in this book it just feels like an annoying distraction.

Story
Inspired by a handful of old postcards sent by Uncle Leroy nearly a hundred years earlier, Bird and Mimi attempt to trace Mimi’s long-lost uncle and the family medicine bundle he took with him to Europe. “I’m sweaty and sticky. My ears are still popping from the descent into Vaclav Havel. My sinuses ache. My stomach is upset. My mouth is a sewer. I roll over and bury my face in a pillow. Mimi snuggles down beside me with no regard for my distress. ‘My god,’ she whispers, ‘can it get any better?’”

I really wanted to like this book
Reviewed: 2025-02-27
long story short it's just kind of boring.
two first Nations people go on vacation to Europe ostensibly to look for a long lost relative. The narrative switches between their current vacation in Prague and pass events from the the protagonist childhood and some earlier vacations.
I really wanted to like this book I kind of like the idea of the author. I was hoping for more humor, there was no humor. there's a little bit of social commentary. I grew to like the characters, but the story never really went anywhere.

It’s the end of the world as you've never known it. Join the Librarian as he does his best to make the post-apocalyptic world a better place by protecting the weak, fighting injustice, squaring off against a group of former renaissance fair workers who have established a kingdom in the Rocky Mountains, and so on. Can one man make a difference in the face of such murderous cannibals and super smart bears? Probably not.

three adventures each stands alone but also goes with the other ones
Reviewed: 2025-02-11
Jerry is a post-apocalyptic Warrior. in the first tail he hears himself a bit of a reputation, and the second tail that comes back to bite him and in the third tail it sets him up for what I assume are the fourth and fifth books although they all stand alone and could be read separately.
The narrator does a very good job and in my mind has become the voice of this series. I enjoy the humor as well as the interplay of the characters.

engaging but definitely a ya novel
Reviewed: 2025-02-03
The cast of characters from the first novel is back and I really can't say anything else without giving away spoilers..
two things stood out, one is that this is definitely a young adult novel. although I found the story more engaging and the action more engaging than the first book.
The second thing that stood out is is definitely written from a point of view of Hank Green who is on social media a lot. and maybe it could be because of my age, that while I'm on social media I don't find it important and I switch platforms whenever I want. I'm not locked into one although admittedly YouTube probably sucks up the best of my time.
The actors that perform each chapter did a very good job. as I said the story is more engaging.
one thing that's interesting is the platforms he was talking about are starting to die. youtube seems to be okay but nobody's ever on Facebook anymore except to send your grandmother a happy birthday. most the stuff that comes up in your feeds is AI generated follow me stuff. I kind of wonder if it's going to sell ads to AI users who watch AI generated ads? but that really has nothing to do with this book

I'm a convicted murderer with a chip on my shoulder and a dangerous lack of restraint. And then there's Zak. His rap sheet makes mine look tame. The bounty on his head is worth more money than I'll ever make, and the deadly fae that shadow his every step wield more power than I'll ever know. He's the Crystal Druid, and his first mistake was setting foot on my turf. His second was saving my life.

A YA novel meets a romance novel
Reviewed: 2025-01-27
I'm not sure why I ended up slogging through the whole book. The characters are relatively flat and they don't react like a normal people would. one minute they're talking normally the next minute they have knives at each other's throats. The main character is supposed to be a witch but pretty much doesn't perform any magic she's just a woman with a switchblade. Every conversation is just a lead up to some sort of overly dramatic scene. This might be a suitable book for a 13-year-old drama queen. but it certainly wasn't for me

People start dropping dead around Charlie, giant ravens perch on his building, and it seems that everywhere he goes, a dark presence whispers to him from under the streets. Yup, it seems that Charlie Asher has been recruited for a new job, an unpleasant but utterly necessary one: Death.

another great Royce and Hadrian adventure
Reviewed: 2025-01-17
it was another good Royce and Hadrian adventure. if you read any of the other Riyria adventures this one fits right in. the plot is sufficiently interesting, and the characters are what you come to expect.
Royce and Hadrian are hired to assassinated dwarf they find a much bigger plot of foot. they get to bring a cast of characters with them on an island vacation. it reminded me a bit of those 70 sitcoms where eventually they all end up going to Hawaii 😆
first off the bad. after reading all the previous adventures this one is a bit confusing from a timeline perspective. I was kind of hoping it was going to be an adventure post Riyria Chronicles and Revelations. instead it fits in the middle someplace. it did flush out some of the characters although the romance part with Gwen went on way too long it could have been shorter by a couple of chapters and it's sort of, in my opinion slowly diminished the voice character.
the good. the good far outweighs the bad it was another enjoyable adventure I was worried that because of its length it would become tedious but it didn't. Gerard Butler once again who I consider The voice did an excellent job on narration the plot was interesting the characters were interesting.

If you read the title it's not exactly a spoiler that his uncle's a villain,. Or was it building before he died
there's some cool technology some interesting Intrigue the odd plot twist it's a decent romp, Scalzi as usual has an entertaining writing style and Wil Wheaton presents it very well
