Twitter messages difficult to follow
Reviewed: 2023-05-07
I have really enjoyed Robert Galbraith's previous Strike books, but not this one. All the messages to and from characters with odd names and twitter messages as well were difficult to follow and made those lengthy passages of the book boring. I imageine this would not be a problem in a printed text, but figuring out who was sending the message and who receiving went by to quickly.
The plot itself was good and the readers very good. But the frequent and long passages of messages was not.

Story
Like an avenging, purple-haired Jedi bringing balance to the mansplained universe, Bee Königswasser lives by a simple code: What would Marie Curie do? If NASA offered her the lead on a neuroengineering project—a literal dream come true after years scraping by on the crumbs of academia—Marie would accept without hesitation. Duh. But the mother of modern physics never had to co-lead with Levi Ward.

Literary version of a chick flick

From the description I thought this book would be more about science and most certainly less about sex. It was a disappointment.

Story OK, didn't like the reader

The story took a long time to really get me interested, in the end it was okay. I did not like the reader. She often made the police detective and a TV reporter sound like 16 year olds, and in general, an adolescent tone was used.

Story
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe. Catch a tiger by its toe. It's seared into Atlee Pine's memory: the kidnapper's chilling rhyme as he chose between six-year-old Atlee and her twin sister, Mercy. Mercy was taken. Atlee was spared. She never saw Mercy again. Three decades after that terrifying night, Atlee Pine works for the FBI. She's the lone agent assigned to the Shattered Rock, Arizona resident agency, which is responsible for protecting the Grand Canyon. So when one of the Grand Canyon's mules is found stabbed to death at the bottom of the canyon - and its rider missing - Pine is called in to investigate.

The plot of Long Road to Mercy is okay. It's not brilliant, but it could hold a person's interest. The readers, howver, take an okay story and make it less. The female protagonist comes off as flippant even in the most dangerous, worrisome situations for her character. The female protagonist's love interest comes off as a low-IQ football player. There would appear to be no chemistry possible between the two. The only character who is read well is the female protagonist's sidekick.

Story
Ned Vatcher, only 14, ambles home from school in the chill hush that precedes the first storm of the winter of 1936 to find the house locked, the family car missing, and his parents gone without a trace. From that point on, his life is driven by the need to find out what happened to the Vanished Vatchers. His father, Edgar, born to a poor family of fishermen, had risen to become the right-hand man to the colony's prime minister, then suffered an unexpected fall from grace. Were he and his wife murdered? Was it suicide? Had they run away? If so, why had they left their only child behind?

Could have been shorter

I like Wayne Johnston's novels on the whole but this one was too long. It still has the lovely writing and readability but if I had been his editor I would have cut about 1/4 of the book out. I felt impatient in the second half waiting for something to happen. At the end it happened very suddenly and quickly. Not my favourite Wayne Johnston book.
