About this listen
"The reigning queen of STEM romance."—The Washington Post
An Indie Next and Library Reads Pick!
Rival physicists collide in a vortex of academic feuds and fake dating shenanigans in this delightfully STEMinist romcom from the New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis and Love on the Brain.
The many lives of theoretical physicist Elsie Hannaway have finally caught up with her. By day, she’s an adjunct professor, toiling away at grading labs and teaching thermodynamics in the hopes of landing tenure. By other day, Elsie makes up for her non-existent paycheck by offering her services as a fake girlfriend, tapping into her expertly honed people-pleasing skills to embody whichever version of herself the client needs.
Honestly, it’s a pretty sweet gig—until her carefully constructed Elsie-verse comes crashing down. Because Jack Smith, the annoyingly attractive and arrogant older brother of her favorite client, turns out to be the cold-hearted experimental physicist who ruined her mentor’s career and undermined the reputation of theorists everywhere. And he’s the same Jack Smith who rules over the physics department at MIT, standing right between Elsie and her dream job.
Elsie is prepared for an all-out war of scholarly sabotage but…those long, penetrating looks? Not having to be anything other than her true self when she’s with him? Will falling into an experimentalist’s orbit finally tempt her to put her most guarded theories on love into practice?

Not my favourite
Unfortunately Elsie’s personality is the type that irks me the most. Not only is she kind of a doormat, it’s a damsel in distress story. She can’t make her own decisions about anything. It’s a bit infuriating to listen to her naïveté. It’s cute at glance but I would’ve enjoyed a story with a stronger female lead.

Excellent narrator
After over 200 books, I think this is my favourite narrator. The energy and emotion with which they tell the story is unmatched. The performance alone makes listening to this book worth your credit.
The story itself is also good, and enjoyable, though not amazing in its own right.

PHENOMENAL
Ali should not apologize for getting in the weeds of academic politics. As someone who works in a department of a university it helped me understand my job and appreciate the world of academia more. This has to be one of her best books yet. I wish I could discuss and gush over this book face to face with her. I loved every bit of it.

Oh My Gosh.
Like literally in love with Jack but also I meed a restraining order against him cuz he’s too perfect and that sort of stability would be scary… also Elsie’s really relatable. I agree with uncle Paul and would also have a 3some with them

Couldn’t stop listening!
I’ve read almost all of Ali Hazelwood’s work and this was just as captivating as the rest of it! The story was really well developed with lots of interwoven pieces that kept me locked in till the very end. I didn’t want it to be over 🥲 I read a review that said that Elsie was too much of a doormat, but I’d have to disagree. Hazelwood does an excellent job of illustrating the complex character that Elsie is - all of the factors that influenced her to be who she is and the multidimensional personas she embodies. Loved it! Will listen to it again.

Perfect mix of reality and fantasy
Those of us in academia know this story had some brutally realistic storylines. And then to weave in a completely unrealistic love story made this gold!
