About this listen

Major motion picture already in development with Temple Hill Entertainment

Set amid the breathtaking beauty of Oxford, this sparkling debut novel tells the unforgettable story about a determined young woman eager to make her mark in the world and the handsome man who introduces her to an incredible love that will irrevocably alter her future - perfect for fans of JoJo Moyes and Nicholas Sparks.

American Ella Durran has had the same plan for her life since she was 13: study at Oxford. At 24, she’s finally made it to England on a Rhodes Scholarship when she’s offered an unbelievable position in a rising political star’s presidential campaign. With the promise that she’ll work remotely and return to DC at the end of her Oxford year, she’s free to enjoy her Once in a Lifetime Experience. That is until a smart-mouthed local who is too quick with his tongue and his car ruins her shirt and her first day.

When Ella discovers that her English literature course will be taught by none other than that same local, Jamie Davenport, she thinks for the first time that Oxford might not be all she’s envisioned. But a late-night drink reveals a connection she wasn’t anticipating finding, and what begins as a casual fling soon develops into something much more when Ella learns Jamie has a life-changing secret.

Immediately Ella is faced with a seemingly impossible decision: turn her back on the man she’s falling in love with to follow her political dreams or be there for him during a trial neither is truly prepared for. As the end of her year in Oxford rapidly approaches, Ella must decide if the dreams she’s always wanted are the same ones she’s now yearning for.

What the critics say

"Narrator Julia Whelan performs her appealing debut novel as well as listeners would expect, which is to say, terrifically.... The personalities pop, her pacing is superb, and the realism she injects will keep you wide-eyed." (AudioFile)

It’s a love story

I’m not a fan of love stories but I survived thanks to Julia’s beautiful writing. I did, however, dislike the main female character from start to finish and it was only the other characters that saved it for me.

Wonderful!

I have been enjoying Julia Whelan as a narrator but this was the first book I listened to in which she was both author and narrator. She is a wonderful writer! The story was beautifully written, and with an unpredictable yet heart warming end. I will look out for her books in the future! Her voice is like velvet! It is so soothing and calming to listen to. Thank you Julia!

Julia can do no wrong!

great characters, description and story. The best narrator in audio books! I could tell this was adapted from a screenplay, can't wait to see the movie version.

THIS NEEDS TO BE A MOVIE!

I loved this book so much! It would make a beautiful screenplay with all the architecture and such. The characters are wonderfully created and narrated. I would highly recommend as Julia NEVER disappoints!

Great book

Overall, great book. An excellent balance of love, ambition, grief, strength, pride..

Julia Whelan does a great job narrating, with her blend of character voices, accents, and emotion in her voice.
Note, this is an earlier recording by her, it is not at the same quality of her latest work, that puts her in GOAT territory.

However, the book is not perfect; the start is not so great, I did not like the direction it was taking, or some of the characters and their decisions. I thought some of the side stories were relatively unneeded. Also, some interactions between characters were unnatural, with forced drama to make the book more interesting.

I recommend this book, and I implore readers to continue reading, even if they don't enjoy the start.

Simply loved this book!

This was a truly romantic book, in the real and best sense. I didn’t want it to stop. I would repeat sections just to hear them again.
I cannot recommend this book more!
