About this listen
Fans of The Historian won't be able to put down this spellbinding literary horror story in which a Columbia professor must use his knowledge of demonic mythology to rescue his daughter from the Underworld.
Professor David Ullman's expertise in the literature of the demonic - notably Milton's Paradise Lost - has won him wide acclaim. But David is not a believer.
One afternoon he receives a visitor at his campus office, a strikingly thin woman who offers him an invitation: travel to Venice, Italy, witness a "phenomenon", and offer his professional opinion, in return for an extravagant sum of money. Needing a fresh start, David accepts and heads to Italy with his beloved 12-year-old daughter, Tess.
What happens in Venice will send David on an unimaginable journey from skeptic to true believer, as he opens himself up to the possibility that demons really do exist. In a terrifying quest guided by symbols and riddles from the pages of Paradise Lost, David attempts to rescue his daughter from the Unnamed - a demonic entity that has chosen him as its messenger.

Story
It’s the house of their dreams. Former marine Harry and his wife, Sasha, have packed up their life and their golden retriever, Dash, and fled the corporate rat race to live off the land in rural Idaho. Their breathtaking new home sits on more than forty acres of meadow, aspen trees, and pine forest in the Teton Valley. Even if their friends and family think it’s a strange choice for an up-and-coming pair of urban professionals, Harry and Sasha couldn’t be happier about the future they’re building, all by their lonesome.

Story
Episode Thirteen takes them to every ghost hunter's holy grail: the Paranormal Research Foundation. This brooding, derelict mansion holds secrets and clues about bizarre experiments that took place there in the 1970s. It's also famously haunted, and the team hopes their scientific techniques and high tech gear will prove it. But as the house begins to reveal itself to them, proof of an afterlife might not be everything Matt dreamed of.

Story
In a boarded-up house on a dead-end street at the edge of the wild Washington woods lives a family of three. A teenage girl who isn’t allowed outside, not after last time. A man who drinks alone in front of his TV, trying to ignore the gaps in his memory. And a house cat who loves napping and reading the Bible. An unspeakable secret binds them together, but when a new neighbor moves in next door, what is buried out among the birch trees may come back to haunt them all.

Story
For nearly two decades, Jamie Warren has been running from darkness. He's haunted by a traumatic childhood and the guilt at having disappeared from his disabled brother's life. But then a series of unusual events reunites him with his estranged brother and their childhood friends, and none of them can deny the sense of fate that has seemingly drawn them back together. Nor can they deny the memories of that summer, so long ago—the strange magic taught to them by an even stranger man, and the terrible act that has followed them all into adulthood.

Intelligent Chills
At first I was very uncertain of the narrator but as the story progressed, I came to find they had chosen exactly the right person. This story is not new it's ideas but it's gripping and smart. There's a simple terror in it, the question of "What if?"

Great Story but Leaves Me Wondering
Great story, well paced. Characters are nicely developed. Scary but not terrifying. It ends too abruptly - it needs another chapter or an epilogue.

In from the start
Really great listen. Loved the narrator. Could see him in my head. Thought there would be a bit more historical reference, but it didn’t taken away from the story

Hooked to the finish
I'm not usually a thriller/horror reader, and came in expecting something like Dan Brown with some gore and a Milton theme. I was wrong as the book quickly became something very different. Pleasantly surprised!

At first I hated the narrator but then
I ended up really enjoying this and felt the same about "The Oracle" the narrator sounded like a cheap detective novel....but...as I listened, it's a really good scary story an I'm a big fan of those!!

Over hyped and unexpectedly boring,
I picked this book as it seemed like something creepy that I would like but I was massively disappointed in both the story and the narration. It was recommended by Gillian Flynn so I thought it would be awesome as I find most of her books are great. Instead, I found a book that didn’t seem to keep its core narrative focused enough. I found that it rambled and didn’t make one really wonder about the existence of demons for the main character. It could be that the mediocre and blustering narration may have distracted me from small nuances in the story. The narration was not a good fit for this story. The ending was equally disappointing and just added more questions (not thoughtful questions) about the author’s intent. I would not recommend this book.
