In the aftermath of the Cold War, American intelligence caught three high-profile Russian spies: Aldrich Ames, Edward Lee Howard, and Robert Hanssen. Wer war Dorflehrer Kallmann wirklich? Wer war Eugen Kallmann? Warum musste der beliebte Gesamtschullehrer in der beschaulichen schwedischen Kleinstadt sterben? War es wirklich nur ein Unglücksfall, wie die Polizei behauptet? Als sein Nachfolger nach der langen Sommerpause seinen Dienst antritt, findet er im Pult unter Kallmanns Sachen eine Reihe von Tagebüchern, die ihn schon bald daran zweifeln lassen, dass sein Vorgänger tatsächlich eines natürlichen Todes gestorben ist.

Zusammen mit Oma Ilse und seiner Schwester Suse stürzt sich Fritz ins Abenteuer. Sie pachten von Besitzer Wittenborn ein Stück Land, so wie viele Bärstädter auch. Und schon bald haben sie Erfolg. Doch Familie Fuchs entdeckt, dass sie sich blenden ließ.
