About this listen

Twins David and Dennis Pischke's lives change forever when their father dies and a man damaged by the war arrives at their farm near the isolated town of Moosehorn, Manitoba. Boleslaw Domko quickly works his way into their lives and their mother's bed.

Where Children Run opens with one of their earliest memories - the day Domko throws their infant stepsister against the wall. In this firsthand account, the twins recall years of neglect, starvation, and enslavement; horrific beatings and candlelit nights spent in the nearby St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Neighbors intervene, but their efforts provide only temporary relief as the children's mother - also living in fear - refuses to press charges.

The brothers vow that if they survive, they will someday expose their tormentor and members of their mother's religious organization who turned a blind eye to their suffering. This is their story - told with stark honesty and in heart-wrenching detail.

Where Children Run is a timeless, unforgettable audiobook about survival, a powerful testament to the strength and adaptability of the human spirit.

Contains mature themes.

Heartbreaking

There were parts of this book I just had to fast forward through, especially when Danko was abusing and killing their horse. If you’re planning to listen to this book, please know there can be some things in it that can make you very depressed so be advise.

The souls of the twins stayed STRONG.

It is always sad to hear about people, especially children, being tortured. This factual story is difficult to listen to, I feel that the knowledge this stuff happened, and is still happening, is something we all need. We can't hide from it, nor should we. We need to be aware of it, so that we can help those that suffer from physical, mental and emotional abuse.
This book was wonderfully written.
I appreciate the author's note. It was definitely a plus to hear how the family got on after the horrible things they endured.

The overall bravery of the twins to survive the brutal child abuse.

The abuse the stepfather inflicted on the step children, and their mother's failure to protect her children from the brutal child abuse.

Engaging story that broke my heart.

I enjoy a good survival story. What I liked most was the perspective on a religion that my husband was raised in. I have never understood the contradiction of the JW faith.

My heart was broken at the absolute cruelty that these children suffered. Some aspects of the story were difficult to hear. Be prepared.

Heartbreaking reality

What a wonderful and heartbreaking story of strength and suffering. I cried and I laughed and then I cried some more. A Very sobering history that makes me appreciate what I have.

Heartbreaking

This story is very well written. I don’t know how children survive such abuse. The mother is almost as bad as her husband for allowing this to continue. Escape from the stepfather was impossible. Authorities were of no help, which led to more torture and pain. Thank God the children survived and moved on to a normal life, but not without scares and nightmares. Definitely will keep you wanting to hear more. I had cried and laughed with this amazing story, and can’t believe this actually happens to families. God bless the children.

wow

I was in shock the whole book. I found myself so affected , sad and angry for the children even after so many years. Occasionally I felt the narrator sounded too chipper for the situation but overall she has a voice and style that makes all the abuse possible to get through. Such an amzing tragic yet inspiring story.

Must read

This is by far one of the saddest and best books I have heard. Many times did I want to climb in the phone and save those little twins.
