Ten strangers are lured to an isolated island mansion off the Devon coast by a mysterious "U.N. Owen". At dinner a recorded message accuses each of them in turn of having a guilty secret, and by the end of the night one of the guests is dead. Stranded by a violent storm, and haunted by a nursery rhyme counting down one by one...one by one they begin to die. Who among them is the killer? And will any of them survive?

What it says on the tin. Agatha Christie is the queen of mystery, and this installment is (in my opinion) her greatest triumph.

Historia
The fourth and final year of the Civil War offers one of that era’s most compelling narratives, defining the nation and one of history’s great turning points. Now, S.C. Gwynne’s Hymns of the Republic addresses the time Ulysses S. Grant arrives to take command of all Union armies in March 1864 to the surrender of Robert E. Lee at Appomattox a year later. He breathes new life into the epic battle between Lee and Grant; the advent of 180,000 black soldiers in the Union army; Sherman’s March to the Sea; the rise of Clara Barton; and much more.

Historia
If anyone considered an army wife to be merely the kite’s tail, Beatrice Ayer Patton had the perfect retort: “How high can a kite soar without its tail?” General George Patton once remarked that World War II undoubtedly would have lasted a lot longer were it not for his soldiers and his wife. Those who knew the Pattons were aware of the vital role Beatrice played in his reaching his destiny, but few others understood the singular impact of this remarkable woman whom people described as having “a personality which radiates like a brilliant gem”.

Behind every great man is a good woman.
Revisado: 11-25-23
*I received a free copy of this audiobook for review purposes*
Extensively researched and well written, this book is a fascinating look into the woman behind the man. George Patton was in many ways larger than life, but that doesn’t make Beatrice Patton any less interesting in her own right. She was the support structure that allowed her husband to be the giant that he was. Her support, both emotionally and financially, was indispensable.
This is an easy listen, and contains much good information. If you’re looking for revelation on why George Patton was the way he was, this is a great read.

Historia
Nazi Germany was driven by a desire to dominate the world and create a new master race. Every aspect of life in the Third Reich was focused on the goal of Aryan supremacy, and science and technology were no exception. Under the Nazis, conventional science and a range of fringes sciences were legitimate areas for research and development.

Good in practical, less in experimental.
Revisado: 10-24-23
This book tends to present wild Nazi experiments with the same solemnity as as their actually developed technologies. It’s fine when talking about rockets and planes and tanks, but when it starts going on about The Bell and Foo Fighters I can’t take it super seriously.

This is a collection of short biographies on people famous throughout history for all the wrong reasons.
There is a good variety of leaders chosen from different time periods and geographical locations.
Some of the ‘facts’ in this book are based on commonly reported ancient propaganda, but with so many people to cover it’s inevitable that exhaustive research can’t be done on everyone.

This reads like a series of high school level essays written by the same student. There are a lot of repeated phrases from one volcano to the next. Each chapter is a recitation of basic facts about the chosen volcano without going into the science of vulcanology or having a real discussion on the historical/personal impact of each eruption.
You could probably find a very similar Top 20 Volcanoes list online without too much trouble that would give you much of the same information.

Historia
The Battle of the Bulge was the largest land engagement of World War II. The German counter-attack, spearheaded by three Panzer armies, found the Allies unprepared and ill-equipped. As the fighting raged across the frosty forests of the Ardennes, it was left to a few untested US Infantry divisions to hold the Allied lines. Written by one of the world's leading experts on the subject, this account provides an essential introduction to the events of winter 1944-'45 and to the many soldiers who risked their lives in defence of freedom.

Decent Account
Revisado: 09-06-23
*Full disclosure: I received a free copy of this audiobook from the publisher.*
First off: this is not the best book on the battle of the bulge. That said, it’s not bad. I would recommend it to people who are just learning about the battle, or people who are obsessed with it. This book is fairly short, and easy to listen to and gives a good overview not just of the battle itself, but of the war in Europe surrounding the battle. This book also contains some very good first hand accounts that I haven’t heard before.
Now for some nitpicking. It seems strange to me that for such a short book it took so long to get into the battle itself. Also, for readers who have even a basic knowledge of WWII in Europe, some of the tangents the author runs off on are really not necessary to the main subject at hand.
The narrator was good, when he wasn’t mispronouncing words. He had trouble with general vocabulary as well as names of people and places, mostly with German/French/Dutch words, but also some English words as well.
In my opinion, this is worth the read, but it is definitely not the best account out there about the battle of the bulge.

Historia
Between 1348 and 1715, western Europe was fraught with turmoil, beset by the Black Plague, numerous and bitter religious wars, and frequent political revolutions and upheavals. Yet the Europe that emerged from this was vastly different from the Europe that entered it. By the start of the 18th century, Europe had been revitalized and reborn in a radical break with the past that would have untold ramifications for human civilization.

Good Overview
Revisado: 04-27-23
This is a good overview of the history of Europe from the Renaissance to the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment. It’s difficult to be an expert on such a broad topic, and as such there are some minor historical inaccuracies. That said, if you are looking for an introductory course to this time frame in European history, or if you are looking to see how different historical events fit together during this time frame, this is a good course.
